I'm trying to find some alternative programs that I can use. So what
programs do you guys for the following things:

Newsgroup Reader(don't need a program that will download binaries)?
Email client?
FTP Sever software?
Download Manager?
Firewall?
Zip/Rar utility?

WinZip, if that's what you mean -- the word "Rar" is Swahili to me.

I use Gravity. I think it does download binaries, but I've
never used that feature. It doesn't hurt anything. My only problem
now is that I've clicked the option that "shows full headers,"
and I can't turn it back. I've done all this before without
trouble, but this time the option just disappeared.

> Email client?

Using Pegasus, but I'm soon going to experiment with
Foxmail. Pegasus has an addon for "Multipop," but it's cumbersome,
(the addon, I mean), and I'm suspicious that it's lost a message
for me.

> FTP Sever software?

Just switched from WS-FTP which I liked, to Filezilla which
I like even better, (so far). [Now if I could only remember the
starting directory for my old website.(:-()]

> Download Manager?

DL Expert. Sometimes cantankerous, but the problem may be
elsewhere on my system, or on the net. Don't really know of
anything better.

> Firewall?

Zone alarm. Yes, maybe some can get around it, but they're
doing it awfully quietly if they are.

> Zip/Rar utility?

Winimp. It works and it doesn't give me any problems. I
love the bit where I can be in Windows Explorer and right click on
a zip file and I get an "expand here" option. One right click and
one left click and the whole operation's done. Super. That's
performance.

It's OK. Please don't bother to respond. I found it in the
help file. It's the "h" key. Who'd have thought of using there
keyboard? (;-))

Outlook Express 6.0 SP1. You should update your version (6.0) to 6.0 SP1 as
it now offers ability to delete individual messages from your computer, and
set OE to read all mail/news in plain text. I have used Calypso and Foxmail
but always seem to come back to OE.

Tried loads (I used to have an unreliable ISP) either spyware or buggy.

DLExpert is my favourite as it's never munged a file & stardownloader seems
ok but I haven't used it much.

I occassionaly use HTTP Zip Dowloader (when I don't want to download a
whole zipfile) http://203.157.250.93/win32asm/source0.html .

Hey, have you looked at the appropriately-Tiger-named Sylpheed-claws?

Been playing with it more, lately, having installed it a month or so
ago.

Does X-Faces.

Until I pretty much settled in on slrn, I was doing Knode -- it was
here, and a quick setup with no real learning curve, which is hardly the
case with slrn. These, and others <g>, are all still available at a
click, of course.

When I was trying to get X-Face *sending* to work with slrn (background:
turns out there are some characters within the encoded header that need
to be *escaped*), it was frustrating to have to send to alt.test, then
boot into Windows to look at the result with Xnews. That makes for
slooooow testing.

<D'oh!>

Realized this weekend that I had Sylpheed installed during that whole
process, and didn't realize it would display X-Faces.

</D'oh!>

> > FTP Sever software?

Linux - FTP client?

gFTP, here. Unlike my old Win standby, LeechFTP, this one autorefreshes
the remote on a transfer. Unfortunately, for some reason, that takes
*longer* than clicking Refresh in LeechFTP. John Corliss would get a
kick out of that part, since he was frustrated by the need to click
Refresh to get a non-cached ls with LeechFTP. :)

> Windows - Ultimate Zip, Linux - Gozip

Gozip, eh? Will explore. I've not looked beyond the ark util that Mdk
install loaded.

Not freeware (see header) but if I did use a freeware one, it
definitely would be Free Agent or possibly Gravity

Probably not considered freeware: Outlook Express

The only one I could seem to get to work halfway decent was Cerberus
and even that was a little flakey.

Personally don't use one nor see any value (for me) to do so.

On one machine I use Outpost, on two others Tiny (only because I
haven't gotten around to updating them yet), on another Kerio.

Hadn't noticed that.

It seems to be Yer Basic Client. Can't say it offers anything of
particular note, except for the X-Face capability. It's fairly
tweakable. Of course, it's not Xnews.

I rarely use it, but of the usual suspects (Star, Smart, Fresh...) it's
the one I kept. Browser integration on all of them seems to be iffy (if
you're not using IE, anyway, which would be me) even where claimed.

There's even a naming contest going on:

<q>

But due the fact the "Developers of SmartFTP" don't want to provide the
name SmartFTP for this project anymore ( http://daemon.smartftp.com ) we
will change the name of our FTP Server. For this reason we want you to
mail us your ideas about how to name it for future.

At the left of my "Thread pane" I have the tree structure.
On top of that is a box with a black triangle pointing right. If
you have the same, you should be able to click in that box with the
triangle to toggle the option. Is that what you're asking about?

I've never used Gravity, but lemme make a wild guess, here: that expands
all threads. How am I doing, so far? If I'm wrong, stop reading. :)

What he wants is not a threaded view, but *all of the posts in a thread*
laid out *end-to-end* like if you took a bunch of printed pages and put
lined them up in a vertical row on your floor. Kind of a roll of toilet
paper with a lot of printing on it.

Sweet Blinky... there used to be a company that produced toilet dispensers that
dispensed toilet paper one sheet at a time. I think the company folded.

I'm referring to the common dispensage roll, of course, with which I
figure many are familiar. :)

It's all in the headers. Have fun. Post a message for me in one of the
internal groups if you get into my Hamster, willya? And do treat
yourself properly on the FTP. You can probably get in through the web
server, no way in fscking hell that one's tight. They're all on the
default ports; a big bad cracker boy like you should have no problems
at all. See ya!

Correction: it should read "big bad hacker boy". Crackers crack software
protection. Hackers can make there way into computer systems.

Now that you are enlightened you can pray to the cracker and hacker gods
correctly.

Wrong.

Hacker = Very skilled programmer / one that knows his computer system
very well. Its a title of honor. Also used about a group of people
spreading "mischief" at MIT. (hacks.mit.edu).

See the Jargon file for correct definitions:

http://tuxedo.org/jargon/html/entry/hacker.html

and

http://tuxedo.org/jargon/html/entry/cracker.html

Thank you for playing.

And now that you are enlightened about the new hackers dictionar / the
jargon file, you should bow down before its might and read through
it.

FTP... comes with Netscape on the free disks found in shops in the UK.
You can view both local and remote as folders and files, with drag and drop,
right click menus, etc.
I use this to upload to sites and to download from FTP sites.

Have downloaded "Outpost", and trying it out.

Winzip (not free) on this PC.
PKzip (free for personal use) on the other computers.
ARJ for DOS systems.

I agree with you on this. I would also say the same about RAM memory
managers.

[OT]:
As for your other post, I stand corrected on the definitions of
hacker/cracker. Though I knew the def. for hacker (I said "hackers CAN
break into..." intentionally), I now know that software crackers are a
subset of crackers. I had come to think of the malicious ones as black hat
hackers.
I had read the def. of hacker before, but it was good to be refreshed. If
you want to discuss this further please respond to my email.
