I thought I found a free email group that included the traditional
listserv email commands, subscribe, unsubscribe, digest -- that users
could submit by email.

Yahoo groups claimed to impliment these commands, but on testing, they
did not work. Reading users dialogues with yahoo, I learned that these
command have been unrealiable or not working for some time.

So I still can not find a host that lets a person create a free email
listserv, with email commands - the kind implimented by majordomo and/or
mailman software.

Please readers - do not offer me places to get the software free! That
does no good unless you can find a free server to run the software on!
True, I could probably pay a monthly fee for an ISP that includes this
software. But I hope this service has not been entirely abandoned.

If so, I was recently considering creating a home made one, using filter
rules on my email client. A little slow, but it might work. I was hoping
I could create a simple alias for a group of email addresses, and then
define a filter rule in my client: If the subject says ``subscribe''
forward this email to ``alias''. Have not tried it yet.

I'm the owner/moderator of several Yahoo listserv groups, and the
email commands most certainly do work.

Have you tried or tested this recently?

I created a group to test these functions and correctly sent the
groupname...@yahoogroups.com command for a new user (not me the
moderator). The email never bounced, but as the group owner/moderator I
never received the message, the user never was added to the group through
this commend, etc. I did this test repeatedly, for several different
email addresses. That is why I started wondering if yahoo distinguishes
``joining'' the group from merely `subscribing'' to getting the emails?

When I reviewed the ``Yahoo Answers'' discussion posts, I found a
relavent recent post of another who had this problem. The yahoo answer
was that this fuction did not work at the time of the post, and he
recommended that the moderator do a web based invite and/or add instead.

I found another post complaining that `unsubscribe' did not work. Again
the yahoo answer confirmed that this was true and suggested a workaround,
going to the website and changing settings there. I found, I think at
least 4 posts having trouble with the email commands.

I wish I were wrong. I can post the reader's question/answers here, if
you doubt that others have had this trouble.

I haven't tried it myself, but I often get notices of people
subscribing and unsubscribing. Since most of our members are
email-only users, I assume they are doing those actions by email, but
I don't know for sure. However, before my comment above I did try
sending emails to

groupna...@yahoogroups.com and
groupnam...@yahoogroups.com

and did receive replies. In the case of
groupnam...@yahoogroups.com (switch from individual email to
digest) the reply asked that I confirm the switch by replying to the
reply.

I wonder, is it possible that a spam filter is getting in the way?

I can only think of FreeLists <http://www.freelists.org/>. I used it for two
years for an Advanced Logistics course at our local University. They have a
focus on science and technology so not all list submissions are accepted.
Anyway, if it happen to you try explaining your reasons again verbosely. The
first sampling is done by key words. ;-)

I doubt the spam filter idea, since it would have to be yahoo's own filter
dropping out its own message. And there were no messages in the author's
spam.

Could you possibly try the subscribe or unsubscribe commands to see if they
work for you?

Hi,

Below are just a few of many complaints to http://answers.yahoo.com/
that the groupname...@yahoogroups.com does not work:

===========

For the last 2 days, the group -subscribe email addresses of multiple
groups I've tried to join haven't worked. I've tried using different
email accounts to no avail. When I send an email to the -subscribe
address, no confirmation reply is received. Here is one of the group's
whose subscribe address isn't currently working: BasingstokeFreegle-
subscribe@yahoogroups 4 days ago - 5 hours left to answer.

-- In GroupMana...@yahoogroups.com, "edwhuk" wrote: On a few
hundred groups in the UK we have had no members able to join by mailing
the -subscribe address since the 2nd.

If a new person tries to subscribe using groupname-
subs...@yahoogroups.com/.co.uk nothing happens - as modorators we
receive no email, and the person receives nothing either. We have
restricted access, so should be able to moderate the membership when they
send an email.

Has anyone had similar issues? It's really frustrating us now!

Thanks

I've also run into this problem with multiple groups that I've tried to
join in the last two days. No confirmation reply email is received when I
send an email to the -subscribe email address. One of the groups this is
affecting is: BasingstokeFre...@yahoogroups.com

Searching at answers.yahoo.com does not result in any hits on your issue.

You will have to provide a specific working link to such a complaint.

And...

... this has nothing to do with freeware.

That address as posted is not a syntactically correct email address.

You are posting here with a gmail address in the clear. Do you have a
yahoo account?

Maybe the BF recycling group moderator is still off on a holiday and not
doing hir moderator duties.

You can also use the ilovefreegle system to join the BF group which
allows usage/interaction via the facebook or google systems as an
alternative to yahoogroups -- each of which strategies of access has its
own particular disadvantages.

https://direct.ilovefreegle.org/login.php?action=join&then=displaygroup&groupid=207

That page was reached from this page by locating Basingstoke on the map
https://ilovefreegle.org/groups/

If you hold your cursor/pointer over the map in the south-central region
the tooltip will annunciate Basingstoke to click on and it becomes
groupid 207.

I sent an email to BasingstokeFre...@yahoogroups.com and
received an email to confirm the join request and then the
follow-welcome, within an hour. So that seems to have worked.

An hour later I sent an email to
BasingstokeFree...@yahoogroups.com

but have not received any kind of confirmation in 12 hours.

I have corrected it.

If you can pay monthly for a wordpress hosting, then a good choice for you can be a free listerv called Mailing Group Listserv plugin which has all functions like subscribe, unsubscribe, group email footer customization options, custom content for subscribe email, public or private groups and much more.

It can be found here:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mailing-group/

Even the paid version is very reasonably priced, no per month or per member charges nothing.
