v 2.5.1 (Mar 29, 2005 )1,033,440 bytes

Because of the way Windows allocates disk space, almost every file is given more disk space than it needs. This extra space is sometimes called "slack". In most cases, the amount of slack, or wasted, space increases with drive size, especially when the drive is formatted with the FAT16 filesystem.
How much of your disk space is being wasted? Karen's Disk Slack Checker will let you know. You'll also discover which filesystem is used on each of your drives, and the drive's "cluster size", or smallest unit of disk space allocation.

"She was a great one"? I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.
Great programmer? *I* am not qualified to judge.
Great person? *I* didn't know her.

Hi, Susan.
Yes. I agree.
There have been a few truly great programmers, who gave us tools
of excellence, tools that worked well at their tasks and had
brilliant interfaces that were very high on the scale of
usability. Such software is rare, even in the commercial world.
Proxomitron comes to mind. I've forgotten the name of the coder.

Even though it was shareware, I have to put in a plug for Bob
Wallace, who cobbled his word processing masterpiece: PC-Write.
Written in assembler, it ran with blazing speed and unparalleled
usability for writing and editing. It offered more than 300
customization switches, most of which were suggested by users,
incorporating magnificent features for people with handicaps. He
invented, in this program, our familiar Windows "sticky keys,"
and the "visual beep" for people who are deaf. It doesn't get
better than this.

These three people are no longer with us, and I wish to, here,
honor their memories. I'm a musician, and it's hard for me not to
think of these people as artists.

I'm sure there a dozens of generous freeware programmers. Here are
the few I know of and appreciate their work. Mark Russinovich, Irfan
Skiljan, Neil Reubenking, and Dino Nuhagic.

Forgot about Neil Reubenking. Until ZDNet went to a paid subscription
service, Reubenking was a major freeware utilities resource.

Let's not forget the tens of thousands of programmers currently or otherwise involved in
all the drivers, utilities, daemons, networking services, kernel, window managers,
distro's blah just on Linux.

Then there's all the other OS's, and freeware on other platforms, and freeware prior to
the introduction of the PC as well.

And don't forget that in the eyes of many of the -then- regulars of this

Very true, John, but he still turns out the best "under the hood" Windows
utilities around. Every so often, I download a .zip copy of Sysinternals
Suite for personal archival purposes in case they (like ZDNet) cease to be
available as freeware. Sysinternals EULAs do not permit redistribution,
and AFAIK, they never have. They have to be downloaded from the source,
which now is M$, and they could go unavailable for future download at any
time, including current versions as well as updates, unless you already
have a copy squirreled away somewhere.

Nir Sofer only rivals Russinovich for the top spot because his utilities
cover a far wider range of tasks. Karen (IMHO) completed the top trio
before she passed.

BTW, the latest version of Sysinternals Suite was updated January 12, 2012.
The 13.3 MB .zip file (and list of included utilities) is available here:

He was though agreeing with Corliss, and spreading totally groundless aspersions against
Mark Russinovich. That's not polite. Neither of those two are fit to wipe his arse, but
nevertheless they choose to try and smear him because he took a well paid job with
Microsoft.

Those two stupids are beyond contempt. Really. They make me sick. Don't just denigrate
them, spit at them. Their dumb arsed attitudes have dragged this newsgroup down for years.
It's about time they grew up, and engaged in some adult debate. Not that either of them
will, because they'd get their sorry arse's kicked every time they come up with this kind
of despicable tittle tattle.

Actually, I don't mind Bob's additions, even though the people
are alive. They're good. I'll add that Bob Wallace's PC-Write was
"honorary freeware," in that the program could be used
indefinitely without payment. You got some goodies if you paid,
but there were no pulled features; the distro even included
thorough documentation, and the table of custom switches was
dizzying: there were over 300 tweaks included. I had a paid copy
(therefore, printed documentation). I'd be using it today as a
text (not programmer's) editor except that the program never
allowed adequate room for a large subdirectory string.

Like Irfan, his program was so delightful that it was an honor to
send him some money.
As a musician, I want to honor software that's so well crafted
that when I'm writing, the tool is so much like an artist-grade
musical instrument that my fingers can fly almost as fast as my
brain can come up with the words. By contrast with PC-Write, Word
Perfect and Word were agonies of sluggishness and
counter-intuitive commands. XyWrite, however, was like PC-Write
in pure speed and handling, but outdid it in desktop publishing
thoroughness.

John, Russinovich didn't really go over to the "dark side." He,
in fact, came from there in the first place. The first time that
I saw his name, he was working for IBM. As an IBM employee, he
donated some nifty freeware to the universe. He was really a good
guy. generous with his time. Unfortunately, I don't remember what
it was. We're talking DOS here.

Even IBM donated great freeware to us. They had an excellent
spell-check program, which after a short time, they made free. In
fact, IBM published a printed directory of all the freeware
written by their staff. As I remember, some of it was made on
company time, some was a volunteer effort. But the company put
all of it into the book, and there was some easy way to get the
programs (I don't remember how this worked).

Let us never forget that gifted programmers have to eat, too. We
are blessed with their donated time and efforts, but let us never
hold against them the fact that they will have to work for their
livings. We often have them for limited periods in their unpaid
efforts. Although our board here is about freeware, let's not
demonize the people. Please.

I really hate to revive such an old post but her website has no content at this time and I am seeking the source code for the replicator program. I'd really like to look into adding a couple things to the interface. I'm hoping someone has it out there and will be willing to send it to me in whichever method preferred (email, direct HTTP, FTP/SFTP, etc... Doesn't matter to me).

When a site disappears, try archive.org

Source code is open-able with 7-zip.

Fantastic!! Thank you both so much. I never remember to look at archive.org for some reason. It's not too often that I hunt down old websites though either.

Cut-throat advertising makes downloading a task best done while secured by a tank division. However, I hacked around the Internet and found a nice site equipped with safe references to safe foss/freeware. Please read into this site and use it. I know all the references, they appear to be very safe:
"http://cybercoyote.org/software/google-custom.shtml" If you are assaulted and battered by malignant adverts, be sure to raise a ruckus at ACF. We want to hear about the criminal sites.

You cannot always avoid the installer. Cnet wraps many of their
offerings in their own installer and that's the only way you can get
it.

There are many first-hand reports here and elsewhere. I am one of them.

Just to be clear, what's bundled in with the Cnet downloads are not
"trojans" per se, but PUPs, junkware offers like Chrome and toolbars.
You can avoid them if you're careful, but they obviously count on lots
of un-careful people. For a while they were big on OpenCandy which I
have heard did sometimes host real malware due to their lack of
screening. I think Opencandy, when caught, apologized and promised to
do better.

I didn't mean to make my post as a stand-alone subject but it was meant to
be under the original subject "Re: Karen's Power Tools". But anyway...

The CNet site mentioned is the site in question. I already have several of
Karen's tools from her original site but was interested in others.

I can't post a screen grab here but my AV states on every download I tried,
statements similar to the following:
.....................................................
ptdirprn-setup-32819359.exe
Threat name: Suspicious.Cloud.9

Discovered: May 22, 2013Updated: May 24, 2013 1:45:21 PMType: Trojan,
VirusSystems Affected: Windows 2000, Windows 7, Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows
Vista, Windows XP

Suspicious.Cloud.9 is a detection technology designed to detect entirely new
malware threats without traditional signatures. This technology is aimed at
detecting malicious software that has been intentionally mutated or morphed
by attackers.
....................................................

Could be false positives or PUP's as others have said. Fact is, they were
labeled as a Trojan by my (pay for) AV software.

I did updates again tonight and went back to the CNet site and it got hit on
as before. Turned off my AV and downloaded it to the desktop (226KB) so I
could submit it to www.virustotal.com and got the following results on the
one file I submitted:

AVware Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT 20150401
AhnLab-V3 PUP/Win32.Downloader 20150401
DrWeb Adware.Downware.10477 20150401
ESET-NOD32 a variant of Win32/WinWrapper.A potentially unwanted 20150401
VIPRE Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT 20150401

That’s 5 out of 56 online scanners available that hit on it. If you still
think it's bullshit, then submit it yourself.

And CNet has gone to hell as noted by others. If you want to use their
software - fine. Just be aware you are probably infected with *something*
whether it be a PUP to something more nefarious - like scanning your system
for personal info like credit cards etc..

Gotta love a one word reply that is so informative and well thought out.

As another data point that I don't know how to interpret:

Karen's Directory Printer is potentially unsafe!
Check results for:

Aren't her tools just visual basic?

Mike,

That is interesting. Most of the scanned dates shown are for Feb and Mar
2015 so others obviously have submitted these for verification. Her tools
are written in VB6 and I've modified several in the past and never found any
bad code. So these are add-on's, wrappers or injected dll's added to her
original software.

Good data point....

Yours is obviously not the real file. It's 232208 bytes, 1/6

Good grief. That is one heck of a newsreader, Bob S.

In replying to posts, the body of your post comes in AFTER someone's
sig! Nor does your newsreader quote or re-quote correctly.

It is really difficult to decipher these posts, when others are using
conventional news readers that do what they're _supposed_ to.

What on earth was Microsoft thinking when they gave this one to the
world?

Bob needs to replace (uninstall) his v. 15 WLM with the 2009 v. which
can handle quote levels correctly.

I believe this one at mediafire is correct
http://www.mediafire.com/download/u8fmnzls0yg0prr/wlsetup-web.zip

filehippo http://filehippo.com/download_windows_live_mail/8305/ Windows
Live Mail 2009

http://www.geekonthepc.com/2010/10/10/get-the-old-windows-live-essentials-2009-back/

Or put live mail 2009 into your favorite search engine and find the
download site that you think is the least dangerous.

Okay - trying to understand what is going on here. I seldom post much
anymore, so I'm not really paying attention to the newsreader format or
comparisons to others. So long as I can send and read email and forums is
all I've been interested in. But I have noticed problems such as when I do a
reply to the group, it has ended up as a stand-alone post. I've done it
several times and it does screw it up. So now that it's been pointed out
about supposedly not quoting correctly, I'll look closer.

This reads some posts with multiple responses showing the initial post with
">" in front of each line. The following posts show with subsequent ">>",
and ">>>" preceding each line - but not all the time. It seems to be a
50/50 deal so I'm assuming a lot of others are also using the same version
of the newsreader.

Dropping back to an older version is not be an option on this system. I'm
using this as a test bed system in my office for verifying "PCI DSS" system
compliance that is part of a future upgrade to a clients system. The rules
insist on having a fully updated system - and it must be kept updated and is
subject to inspections and scans by the credit card companies once the
software is installed. Unnecessary software and add-on's not relating to
business functions needs to be removed. And therein lies the
rub...."relating to business functions" is what has to be proven and how
secure the entire network is.

Windows Live Mail and the newsreader is used in their business and they use
a number of forums and other social sites for their day-to-day business.

So if it's really that bothersome, I'll just lurk and not make any posts

cnet is not a trustworthy site. You must be careful how/what you
actually download from there, and you should treat what you get with
suspicion, as you did.

Did you look at the 2009 Windows Live Mail availability? Your version is
bad; not fit for use as a news agent.

Nevermind; I see your reply about your problem in the retitled subject

I'm familiar with the PCI DSS business from what I've read online.

The situation about using office equipment and connectivity and
hardware/software for interacting on usenet is sometimes problematic,
depending on the relationship of mutual rights and responsibilities
between you and the owner of the business's interest.

In terms of how you might resolve that fairly, that would depend on what
your 'liberties' are.

One example of a strategy is to use a USB stick which has a portable
usenet agent which doesn't require install. One example of such an
agent is portable Thunderbird.

Mike just to keep this readable I've cut the post down to just the link you
made.

Thank you for the link. I have downloaded it and giving it a try and I like
that it's a portable app. It's far different than what I'm used to and not
sure that it's really necessary.

Before any UseNet aficionado jumps in to tell me how bad I am for using the
WLM newsgroup program, consider that UseNet has and is transforming itself
into other social media formats. It is also making itself irrelevant when
you consider how it has degraded itself as a useful tool any longer with all
the trolls and others that just want to be disruptive - rather than
contribute meaningful dialog. I doubt UseNet is going away but it's
popularity certainly has nose-dived in the past several years.

The fact that WLM doesn't quote correctly seems trivial in comparison but I
can understand someone's viewpoint if it actually makes a thread difficult
for them to follow. I don't but then again it's what I'm used to.

According to some market stats I found, WLM is ranked #9 in Feb 2015 (
http://emailclientmarketshare.com/ ). I don't see some other favorites as
being in the top 10 so maybe they aren't used that much anymore.... for
whatever reason.

Tb is fairly popular as a mail and news agent. Historically MS's
Outlook Express was immensely popular in spite of the fact that it had a
number of usenet compliance problems. MS built its OE based on MS
concept of 'corporate email' which subscribed to the policy of TOFU,
text over fullquote under. That corporate email policy is not the
policy of usenet.

OE was followed by the shortlived Windows Mail in Vista, integrated by
default; which was followed by MS abandoning an integrated mail agent at
which time MS was suggesting that people choose some 3rd party agent
while also offering the Live Essentials including WLM. Early WLM was
fairly similar to the previous OE and WM with some exceptions which are
elaborated in a wikipedia article on the subject. Later v. of WLM lost
the ability to handle the quote levels compliantly, which is unsatisfactory.

Usenet continues to evolve and to persist in spite of the factors you
mention. Many of the current usenet users don't do online webforums or
other browser related social media, and it has always been important for
news readers to have agents which are compliant with standards and
traditions and netiquette, in spite of the fact that MS has been
marching to a different drummer since the beginning of OE.

The problem isn't trivial.

I haven't studied the stats, but OE has been/ was/ very popular and WLM
is much like OE for mail. Current WLM v. has a glaring deficiency even
when compared with OE which makes it unsatisfactory as a news agent
whatever its popularity as a mail agent.

Developer focus is quite different for an agent which is 'intended' as a
mail agent with a focus on html composition and rendering as opposed to
a usenet text agent with a focus on how usenet works for its plaintext
readers and as opposed to a usenet binary agent which is focused on how
to best handle multipart binaries with NZB and PAR/PAR2 strategies which
are completely unnecessary for mail or text usenet.

So usenet text like this needs to be done 'right' whether the agent does
mail or binaries or not.

@Bob: Don't give up on posting. But please observe what you have
been posting recently. Look at _where_ you began entering your reply
posts.

When replying to posts: Look for a newsreader's "sig" entry near the
bottom of the post and begin typing above this. That is to say;
please modify your behaviour in replying, by not "bottom posting".

Typical newsreader sig's begin after "-- " (two hyphens & a space)
before the sig begins near the end of each post.

> ----- copied ,because could not be quoted ----

@Bob: Comments from your post couldn't be quoted (& had to be copied
& pasted in) because you have been entering your text BELOW the sig
of the person you were replying to. Typical newsreaders drop all
text below the sig when replying and only the body of the text is
retained (quoted correctly).

> Windows Live Mail. Quote, or no quote?

@FredW: Thank you for posting that link. It gives me great hope that
WLM users will discover this too and at least try it out.

This would eliminate at least two of the most glaring issues of how
WLM is delivering usenet posts.

@Bob: the script described on the above linked page isn't too
difficult to employ and its "AutoHotKey" necessary to run the script
apparently can be run in portable mode and without administrative
privileges. So you should be able to use this without upsetting your
work conditions.

Erm... I mean enter your responses above the bottom sig part or
interspersed and trimmed, is all... top posting is also bad.

Thanks Bob.

Its a small improvement (in that one doesn't need to copy & paste to
simply quote your replies now).

Only problem is, the quoting that WLM does, or rather, it does not
do, still makes for difficult reading & what I have replied to here
is beginning to look mangled.

As WLM does not quote at all, it appears in a conventional newsreader
as if you are the one writing the text that was actually made by the
previous person in their post.

If you look above, the quoted line begining "Erm... I mean" etc and
your quoted response "Okay, I'm entering this above" etc, are in the
same text frame (quote level).

The above quoted material in this post, should by now look like the
following:

------ manual correction ------

------ end manual correction ------

This is now legible and you can see who wrote what, comments from my
two posts and yours are correctly attributed and quoted.

If I came into a long thread mid-way and choose a post that you've
been making (prior to you entering text above the sig), the post I
read looks as though it was made by you (because I can see who sent
the post) but the unquoted body text was written by the person you
were actually responding to. Its not until I noticed your responses
were being being made below a sig line did I work out what was going
on.

Now if you post above the sig line I can at least see the text you
write in the body of the post. But because WLM does not quote
previous posts at all, it still looks as though you have written the
previous persons post. There is no distinction and it takes
deciphering to actually make out who is writing what in a post.

Anyway Bob, thats what happening with your posts and how they're
currently viewed by many others. So thanks for your consideration.

For the 2009 version of WLM (can't remember if later versions are the same),

The relevant settings are found in

Tools/Options/Send tab/News Sending Format = Plain Text

then

Plain Text Settings/
Tick box - Indent the original text with '>' when replying or forwarding.

When replying to a post the cursor is at the top & the text starts 2 lines
down.
I just move the cursor down & backspace twice then move the cursor to the
bottom of the page to start the reply.

Personally, I have broadband connectivity and I don't do browser social
media or web forums. I prefer to give and get support on usenet or
public private nntp groups.

Only when some support is 'dominated' by a webforum superiority over
nntp do I concede to that support source, such as malware removal tech
sites, which are helpful to me when I'm cleaning someone else's system.

Great explanation and now I understand better the confusion WLM is causing

fired up and see if I can't get used to that.

Appears valid still, while the link fron the 1st post seems to hang: "This is the new server, waiting for its content.", and below that a Paypal donate icon.

P.S. Have only tried ptwhois 2.6.6 under Win8.1, but it still works, and the installer automatically handled the VBA runtime.
