Does anyone know of an addon for Thunderbird newsreader to download and
combine multipart postings?

There is no addon for that, if you want to combine multipart postings
you have to use another newsreader to do it.

<http://edmullen.net/Mozilla/moz_combine.php> It's been a long time
since I used it so I can't really speak much for how easy/robust etc it is.

Why bother? Simply download and install Grabit. I've been using it for
years. Very easy to use and reliable too:

John Corliss BS206. Using News Proxy, I block all Google Groups posts
due to Googlespam, and all x-privat.org posts due to forgeries posted
through that service.

No ad, cd, commercial, cripple, demo, nag, share, spy, time-limited,
trial or web wares OR warez for me, please.

+1 Easy to install and use. It has never frozen or stopped working.
Still using the free version and at times I run out of free "search".

Hmmm...

I use Grabit only once or twice a week, and use the paid Search
subscription even less frequently. I did not know there was a free
edition and will be grateful for a reference.

Also, Grabit's online forum appears to be gone. I have no problems with
Grabit - it's a very robust app - but a forum would help me optimize my
usage of it.

Many thanks for all the info and suggestions. It's appreciated.

Ike, here's the link to the free version. You can go there and click on
"FREE DOWNLOAD!"

You're right. When I go to:

http://forum.shemes.com//viewforum.php?f=6

I get "Temporary not available". Hope the forum gets fixed. This is one
of the few forums that I actually bothered to get a password for.

Thanks...

I've been happy with free Grabit for years, and didn't know there was a
free SEARCH function so have been paying for it.

I am using Grabit 1.72 and refuse to update something that works. The
free search function is for about 5 per 24 hours, and when I use my 5,
it gives me a window that encourages me to sign up for the paid version.

@newsfe19.iad:

I like SABnzbd+ found here:

http://www.sabnzbd.org/

From the web page:

"SABnzbd is a free/open-source cross-platform binary newsreader written
in Python.

It simplifies the process of downloading from Usenet dramatically,
thanks to its friendly web-based user interface and advanced built-in
post-processing options that automatically verify, repair, extract and
clean up posts downloaded from Usenet. SABnzbd also has a fully
customizable user interface, and offers a complete API for third-party
applications to hook into."

There is a MS Windows version available for download.

For searching, I use:

http://www.binsearch.info/

Once you find what you want, create and download the *.nzb files. These
can then be loaded into SABnzbd+ or Grabit, for example.

For a long time, I used altbinz which can be found here:

http://www.altbinz.net/index.php

This software went payware but the last free version was the 0.25.0
version. The search capabilities in this version was spotty at best.
Thats when I started using the Binsearch web site.
