"Today Google showed off a ad-supported cellphone that the company plans to offer for
free to interested parties. The product could reach the marketplace within a year, and
will offer Google search, email, and a web browser. 'The move would echo another
recent product launched by a phone industry outsider, Apple Inc.'s iPhone. But
Google's product would draw its revenue from a sharply different source, relying on
commercial advertising dollars instead of the sticker price of at least US$499 for an
iPhone and $60 per month for the AT&T Inc. service plan. Negotiating the fairest way
to split those advertising revenues with service providers could be a big hurdle for
Google, one analyst said. Another problem is the potential that consumers could be
scared off by the prospect of listening to advertisements before being able to make
phone calls, said Jeff Kagan, a wireless and telecommunications industry analyst in
Atlanta."

Freeware programmers: start developing your software for the upcoming rush to wireless
if and when Google wins a planned $4.6B FCC bid.

But the cost will be having to view and or listen to ads.

Not freeware anyway. This group is for discussing freeware, not "freebies".

Obviously, a master of identity obfuscation. Can anybody help me figure
out who's doing the trolling I'm responding to here?

TIA.

JC, Derald is Hummingbird.

I expect him to deny it as it's a public loss of face for him.

Would be a lot of fun as he's confronted with the evidence but at the
moment I'm killfiling the twat.

Hummingbird's style seems to be to do exactly what it is he loudly
protests about in others.

Pretty much what I expected. And since I know where he is (lives and
works) its a bad idea for him to persist in this activity.

> I expect him to deny it as it's a public loss of face for him.

That, and it would work against his ability to continue using sock puppets.

The irony of it is that I was the first to point out what a troll
hummingbird is and when I complained about his behavior, many in the
group more or less piled on to me for doing so.

Now what he is is out in the open though.

By which I mean that it'll be a simple matter to figure out which ISP
he's using and to get his account canceled.

John, I'd like to see Hummingbird to deny he is Derald. After all
Hummingbird absolutely loves to post his denials of everything else.

So this would make any posted proof which reveals he is Derald all the
sweeter.

The ISP thing, which you mention, is the cleverest part of Hummingbird's
spoof and that is not all that clever.

You might need ask the operator of his *regular* posting server, NIN, to
reveal the relevant Hummingbird IP numbers. This is easier than it
sounds because NIN is a whiter than white public service operation in
Germany which ran as a free service at a West Berlin univerisity for
many years.

NIN keeps outstanding records and it zero tolerates bad behavior. As an
example of the standards it enforces, NIN insists on posters using its
service show a real email address. NIN had terminated accounts without
notice for breach of its TOS.

http://news.individual.net/rules.php
http://news.individual.net/faq.php#5.1

I'm fairly sure there are Hummingbird posts made via NIN which would
qualify.

However Hummingbird is using a different ISP and different Usenet server
to perform the Derald spoof.

You mention Hummingbird's work, and as I am making a bit of a boring
post here I will finish with a nice color picture. It's one which
Hummingbird will recognise from some years ago (albeit not with the name
shown there of the new occupants).

A software developers dream.

"At the end of the day, your phone knows you haven't been to your local and suggests
the bartender might be missing you. With a wink and a nudge, it reports three of your
friends are within two minutes' walk and don't you just bet they've got a hankering
for a schooner. For every time you step into the café, the pub, the sandwich shop,
your phone tells Google and the ad sponsors, and Google picks up a fee for the
transaction.
"As we are so often reminded, the greatest potential threat to the privacy of the
individual is the mobile phone. We give away our locations, our contacts, our
financial details to our provider, should they choose to pry. Are we now ready to make
even greater trade offs, giving providers even greater swathes of information about
our lives and interests in return for a few bucks off our phone bills?
"I would gamble, yes. Not everyone has the extra few bucks to spend to safeguard their
privacy and Google's history in that area has not exactly been sterling. Fingers
crossed that getting a phone for free doesn't mean getting gypped on freedom."
