Do Sony cams die?

Some years ago I replaced my DSC F 717 with a new camera. It was not
broken. About a year later I 'rediscoverd' it in my storage room. When I
tried to turn it on nothing happened. I have recharged the battery but
the machine is dead.

Earlier this year I replaced myCybershot DSC T1. More or less the same
story: it wasnt broken, but when I tried to switch it on a few months
later, it was! It now only produces pictures as if you look at an old
videotape in fastforward.
What is it with Sony cams? Do they die when not used frequently?
