The FAX modem in my XP Pro box is on a 2nd phone line, and
it's used only to receive FAXes. But it "rings" through the PC's
speakers when it receives a call - an intrusion if I'm on the 1st
phone line talking on the phone. So in my XP Pro desktop, I
disabled the modem in "Phone and Modem Options" in the
Control Panel in an effort to silence the ringer. But now, it's status
in the "Attached to" column of the Modems tab in "Phone and
Modem Options" is "Not functional", and I can't re-Enable it.
The modem is an internal U.S. Robotics 56K Voice and Data
modem (on a plug-in card) made in 1998.
How can I re-enable the modem?
How can I silence its ring tone without disabling it?

For those Googling, here are the answers:

To re-enable the modem:
rt-clk MyComputer/Manage/DeviceManager/Modems/
U.S. Robotics 56K Voics INT PnP/General tab/Device Usage
set to Enable.

Then, to silence the ring tone when a FAX arrives:
Start/Settings/ControlPanel/Printers and Faxes/Fax/Properties/
Tracking tab/Configure Sound Settings button/uncheck
"Play a sound when the line rings"
