How in God's name do you open them?
I've tried zip, ace, rar, stuffit, arj

what's wrong with this file
(and no it's not the second file of a .rar multifile, it is indeed the first
file in line that's got the .001 extension)

Anybody know how to deal with this?

Help would be greatly appreciated ;)
Thnx in advance,
CyberKiwi

Have you tried concatenating them, and then opening it? ie: In a DOS
prompt:

copy a.001+a.002+a.003+a.004 a.zip

If doing that i would also recomend that you use the /b (as in binary)
switch, have you tried looking in the file with a hex editor? this can reveal
what kind of archive it is..

I have a file splitter called Fragger that splits large files into floppie size
segments wich uses the .001, .002,etc strategy...

Look to see if the individual files are any of the standard floppie sizes...
(360k, 720k, 1440k, etc). That may give you a clue if they were broken to fit
on floppies anyway... may help you to narrow it down.
