Mod a laptop monitor?

I'm planning on building a PC in a suitcase for a friend of mine. He's
a musician and doesn't need anything more than the simplest of
monitors. He's currently very happy with a 14" at 640x480. The
soundcard is what is important to him. We have been looking at cheap
LCD's but even the cheapest are still at around $400 Canadian. We are
now thinking that it might be possible to buy an old crappy laptop for
under $100, separate the display from the laptop, and mod the wiring
to work with the desktop video card.

I was hoping that someone in this group might have some advice on this
topic. Is what I am suggesting even feasable? If so, does anyone have
advice as to the best way to approach it? Does anyone know of some
links to documentation that might explain how to do it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is very possible, but hard to do if you've never done it before.
Laptop LCD panels don't have to follow a standard like normal monitors --
because the company dictates which lcd you use. I suggest you search around
for someone who knows how to hook up the LCD's ribbon cable to a D-Sub type
connection. Also, beware that some laptop panels (such as mine) use digital
connections, which would need a video card with a DVI connection.
