It seems that my java installation now thinks its in a machine in a country
where Java ins not allowed, or rather the updates do. The installer
downloads for the update, and bombs out part way through with error 25099.

I've altered nothing, sounds like a registry entry is aying I'm in some
third world
country.

Right, so it appears that it is in fact the previous update which has
screwed it all up. The uninstall does not work on either machine either, it
only allows me to change the settings etc. So, it was a weed out all the
folders and fix the registry, uninstall the access bridge, and reinstall
from scratch job.. sigh. Be interesting to see what happens at the next
update though.

Hmmm, what strange version of Java are you running over there?
I had no such problems downloading it over hear (in Australia).
I use the Java Runtime environment from Sun microsystems.

Its not strange. It appears that two things have caused this problem.
Firstly, Msoft have done an update which makes some processes slow to
terminate, so Java could not uninstall the older version, then of course, it
all got in a mess as it did not expect this.
