Well, there are much more appropriate groups for test purposes, just

I know this is true, but in this particular case it was messages to this
particular group that seemed to go to that big hole in the sky

As it was a new server, I was suspicious.
I'm sure there is some old sage like character who has written a law that
says all test groups always work perfectly, but others....
And the rest of his writings were not received due to packet loss.
