I've had an email request saying they read through google and have no isp
based nntp and wondered what people suggest as googles video capture has
defeated them on there.

I believe there are still some free nntp servers out there, so thought I'd
ask as they can read these groups but get frustrated at not being able to
post. I tthough Google had an audio version these days, but I have sympathy
with anyone attempting to use Googles crap interface. I would certainly n ot
use it!

I am using eternal september (used to be motzarella):

http://www.eternal-september.org/

I signed up last year when Comcrap decided to end Usenet service for their
customers.

If I remember right, there was a captcha in the sing up page, but I believe
people can send then an e-mail if this is a problem.

See wikipedia for an explanation of the unusual name/concept (eternal
september).

I use AstraWeb. It offers pay by download, instead of a monthly fee,
usage so that you are not pressured to use a lot of bandwidth. And of
course, binaries include audio stuff as well as picture type stuff. The
text posting service appears to be excellent, except it prevents cross
posting to more than three groups at a time (if you do that).

Good luck and have fun.

I am one of the users of AT&T's internet service who was affected when they
pulled their usenet access plug yesterday, July 15, just a few minutes
before 12:00 noon North American Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

There are quite a number of free usenet servers, and some others that cost a
few dollars/euros/pounds a year.

I signed up with:

http://www.albasani.net/

a free usenet service run from Austria. They have over 20-thousand groups
in their list, all text-based, no binary groups.

The website won't bother you with captchas and even some very ancient
graphics-hostile DOSosaurs like Net-Tamer can read the site.

From the contact field on the site, you send an email indicating that you
would like to sign up. They email you your user name, which is your entire
email address that you enter in the email address field; and a password.

You use it just like you did the old service from your ISP, such as what
AT&T's various domains had until yesterday.

Eternal September has a nasty habbit of blocking many email domains for
various reasons, including all the ones under the AT&T unbrella. These
include, among others:

att.net
bellsouth.net
sbcglobal.net
world.att.net

to name a few.

There is also another free service at:

http://www.aioe.net/

or maybe it is a .com

and if you want to pay a little, there is dejanews which has long been
considered to be one of the best usenet servers. I believe that dejanews
also hosts the binary groups as well as the text-only ones.

I figure that if a geriatric DOSosaur like Net-Tamer will work with the
Albasani server, then anything should work with it, and you don't need to
access the groups or even get the list of groups by using the Web.
