Do you rely on a screen reader to access websites?

If so, I need your help. My name is Paula and I am a fourth year
student studying Internet Software Development at Glasgow Caledonian
University, Scotland.

As part of my final year, I have to complete a research project, for
which I have chosen to investigate the issues faced by screen reader
users when they access e-commerce websites.

I am looking for participants to fill out a short online questionnaire
about the issues faced when online shopping sites are accessed with
screen readers.

If you would like to participate in this research, please access the
online survey by clicking on the link below:

http://tr.im/DTFy

If you have any questions regarding the research or questionnaire,
please feel free to contact me at pmoo...@caledonian.ac.uk

. Link not working, at least at this moment. I'm also - possibly
unjustly, but anyway - suspicious of a URL as short as this.

Yeah, nobody would click on a link on a newsgroup. I think I'd wait to see
if the email address replies first.
The whole subject of how to adapt visual computing environments for use by
blind users is quite complex.
For some, a set of self voicing applications like Guide are all they ever
need as they have no interest in windows, files or anything else, just want
to do the basic stuff.

For others, say who work, then a commercial screenreader and some time
learning all the complex functions will be needed and even customised access
for in house software.

On the other hand, the geeky home user with no money can use nvda and
Thunder, and of course those who use the latter may well find that webIE is
great for a more easy to understand web browsing experience.

Its not just cut and dried.

Ha ha! If I were geeky I'd know how to use NDVA and Thunder. (Well
Thunder properly anyway)

. Well, it's actually working now. If anyone's concerned about the URL,
it really maps to
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=bZMc7lB_2f8l67aiYnDCUfUg_3d_3d
which is a common survey site. ..

. This particular survey concentrates on how easy or otherwise VH people
find use of ecommerce sites (i. e. buying things), so is fair enough.

It's a "tiny URL", short and easy to type. These days, they're being
used quite often on micro-blogging services like twitter and identi.ca.
There are quite a few URL-shortening services now; tinyurl.com was one
of the first.

Anyway, I took the survey as soon as I read the post. No problems here.

I saw others say link was broken, but it worked fine for me. As you
said Brian, it is a complicated issue, and your msg only touches on some
of the possible user profiles I can think of, but one has to start
somewhere, and I am all for mainstream comp-users getting an idea of how
it is for us.
The survvey's questions seem to lack a needed reply option. One goes
from having rare problems with pages to having some probs with every page.
BTW-the study is on e-comerce with screenreaders.

Got t-bird working as it should, so I'll say again-took the survey
too/no probs, and I did it as soon as I saw the post. It is a first
step/don't do much on-line shopping, but if they could make it more
accessible....?who knows...

Snipurl is another one that's been around about the same time. If one
has problems the other one will come to your aid.

. Yes, I suspected it was that sort of thing - I just hadn't seen one
like http://tr.im/DTFy before, and I'm very wary of something as short
as tr.im, since I don't know what country "im" is. And yes, I do see
that it's the word "trim". ..

It depends on where you shop. I really like amazon.com, as far as
accessibility goes. Works beautifully with my text-mode web browser
under Linux! Amazon has its own problems, but those are social, rather
than technical.

Yes, Amazon is starting to have serious social/ethical problems in my
humble opinion. Too bad, as their radio announcements were so cool when
they first started out/a few years before they started making money.
They have done some good work as far as cloud aps/platforms go, but 1. I
don't live in the u.s., so I doubt I could afford there shipping... 2.
don't buy music, and wouldn't own a kindle even if it talked//can't see
to read books in print. do3. don't buy movies or much music/rarely want
to watch a movie more than once every few years at the most, and there
is so much good music out there/don't have very main stream tastes, and
the popular stuff I like one can here anywhere/don't need to own it the
month it comes out. I know they sell other stuff, but I also avoid them
because I didn't understand links years ago that instead of sending me
to something interesting just sent me to a amazon link.(lack of propper
alt txt)
There are sites that are pretty easy to use out there, and some that are
impossible. Explain what is up with ccomp usa? I haven't tried in the
better part of a year, but my computer used to shut up almost completely
when I went to their site, and I'm talkikng about everything not just
their browser tab.
