Hi everyone,

I've just subscribe to one of the audio book groups where, it seems posts
have the subject title; i.e. book title and author and, in the body of the
post is all this kind of gibberish language. Well, based on this, i had the
idea of going through each post relating to one book title and author,
copying the contents of each post into a txt file. I've saved the file in
txt format.

Now, the problem, i don't know how to convert this into an mp3. I've tried
renaming the file and including the the .mp3 as its extention however, it
doesn't seem to work. It just adds the .mp3 extention to the file title
rather than converting the file itself.

I'm using WinXP Pro edition. The file is in notepad txt format.

Does anyone know how this can be converted in an mp3?

I could have sworn this sort of thing could be done.

thanks in advance.

Justin R

Hi,
This is something that should be handled by the news reader you are
using. The process differs for each news reader, but you want to
consult your program's help to figure out how to "decode binaries".

This is supposed to be done in Outlook Express. There are several formats,
and I seem to recall all can be handled transparently by OE. I'm not sure,
but maybe setting it as view all messages as text may stop this from
happening? Look in the options settings on the tools menu.

The file can be split over several messages, and its not unusual for some
parts of a post to be missing, completely ruining the file.

Thanks Al and Brian for the reply.

I tried the suggestion of having all my messages red in plain text on OE 6
and have found out that I definitely cannot access the messages on the audio
books news group as, OE crashes when trying to load the message, lol. Never
mind. It's worth a try.

I'm thinking I'll have to post to the news group in question about this. i
was hesitant as I'd prefer not to be flamed personally but, well, needs
must.
I think I will post asking how I can get these books that are posted.

Thanks for your responses, it's got me thinking.

Maybe you should try yenc32:

http://www.yenc32.com/

I don't know how accessible this product is since I am partially sighted and
can manage to see it just fine.

With this program you can also encode mp3 and share them with others.

What groups did you subscribe too?

I never thought to look for audiobook groups.

I don't know anything about Windows XP so I have to ask, do you have
selection for a command-prompt ("DOS box") still available in Win XP?

If so, the program UUDEVIEW may be able to decode the binary attachments
in the messages. The following article describes its usage:

The latest bookmark I have for the UUDeview Home Page is:

Hi, I just found one group so far, it's called
alt.binaries.sounds.audiobooks.

there aren't many listed but, thought it'd be a good idea to get some
downloaded. I'll look at the programme you mentioned. I'm just partially
sighted myself so, I shouldn't have much trouble with it.

thanks,

JUstin

Yes, i believe it is, although, I don't understand at all. Never could in
Win98.
I think I better leave that one as, i don't know a thing about DOS.

thanks for the reply still, it's always helpful to get other people's
advice.

Don't do that. It won't work. These are either UUencoded or Yenc
(spell) format, possibly compressed into a set of .rar files. You
need to look at the subject line thusly:

Subject: A lovely book ! (1/34) - abook.r00 (1/30)

There are two parts here, the first being the number of files in the
book, the second being the file being split up into 30 parts. You
need to join these together (so you have the complete r00 file), then
ensure you have collated all other files in the archive, then
decompress them using Winrar, Winzip etc.
