I am thinking about running Linux but don't know where to start as my Linux
user group in my area which is Huddersfield either doesn't appear either to
exist or doesn't seem to be known to the place where it meets which is the
Head of Steam pub I believe looking at a site for the group a little while
back.
The people serving in the pub at the time I asked didn't seem to know
anything about it at any rate.
I don't have a hardware synthasiser so Speakup could be a problem if I were
able to run Linux.
Would I be best to run something like the Nopics distro where I don't have
to have it on my hard drive as at the moment I am running Windows XP?
I have read of this Orolux but the information on it appears to have
vanished, I get something about the web site not being able to be found when
I go to www.orolux.org
Hope someone could give me some advice.

Hi Michael,

You can run brltty which is a display for braille if you have a braille
display. The other way you could run it is to partion your hard drive
of which Windows is on. If you have more questions please feel free to

I am a member of the Hereford LUG and what you need to do is to
subscribe to the mailing list and ask for someone to look out for you
there - the people at the meeting venues probably don't know what is
going on, only that a bunch of geeks are vacating the corner :-( -
your LUG page is at http://www.hudlug.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page and it
looks very active - more active than Hereford, but we are getting
there!

It will be a problem as you won't be able to do an install on your own
without synth or braille support. Probably the best thing (and
easiest) is to get a machine up and running using something like
Ubuntu, which comes with Gnome by default, and install gnopernicus and
the Festival software synth (sound must be working). Feel free to
give this message to a fellow LUG member, and they may be able to
help. I have installed this by using the following at the prompt:

sudo apt-get install gnopernicus

If you have a hardware synthesiser you could use Debian which I use,
but not in graphics mode - I still find Ubuntu easier for graphics
mode, even if it does install a bit too much :).

No - because there is no synth included. I do actually have a version
of Ubuntu on a live CD with speech which I could send you, but it may
not work, depending on what Ubuntu does with the sound card. it is
the Hory release. The thing is with live CDs is that if you need to
customise it, then you have to do it on every boot. For example, on
my sound card, I have to tweak the audio properties a bit, and
although this is just one command, it is still a pane to do it each
time. The other thing is you can duel boot between XP and your Linux
OS very easily, so I wouldn't bother with a live CD unless you just
want to try it first, and then only if the sound works on the first
attempt.

Never used it sorry.

Hope this has been helpful.

Thanks.
Andrew.
