I would like to see replies from people who are using free AV programs.
1. Which ones do you recommend as effective and quick?
2. Do any free ones come complete with bugs and problems?

I've been using Avast for over a year now. No viruses or other malware that I
know of.

Ditched PC-Cillen (paid) in favor of Avast.

I find Avast tb about as un intrusive as I'd ever want.

Free AVG is effective enough and quick enough for me.

Yes, they pretty much all come complete with bugs and problems.

(You can get paid versions of some AVs, like Symantec or McAfee, and get
extra special bugs and problems if you wish; there's always that
option.)

I have found the best free antivirus to be the AOL Antivirus which is
based on Kaspersky.

Also very good and free is Avira Antivir. Which has a high detection rate.

AVG which I used to use I have removed due to its low detection rate.

I use and recommend AntiVir Personal. Avast! is also pretty good, but
not, IMO, as good as AntiVir.

Avira Antivir PE Classic and AOL Active Virus Shield are two very good
and effective AVs. Active Virus Shield uses Kaspersky's engine which
like Avira's has very high detection rate. You could see for yourself
these tests.
