I thought people already knew that. For those who don't know, dog's real name
is ~ % pW^q$ -#~
NO CARRIER
I dont think even Murray Ball himself knows. You never find out in any
of the strips.

What's the significance of the name "Diogenes Designs"?
Ah, but what proof do you have? ^_^

I have counter-proof.
About the time Murray Ball stopped drawing Footrot Flats, a correspondent to
the Wellington Evening Post suggested "Diogenes" as the dog's name, picking
up on the name Diogenes Designs.
Ball sent a two-frame cartoon (I have it scanned somewhere) to the paper in
reply. First frame: dog laughing hysterically - "Ha ha ha ha ha ...
Diogenes?! ... Hahahahaha." Second frame: dog dejected - "If only..." or
words to that effect.
We have the answer from the horse's mouth (as opposed to Horse's mouth, which
would only appeal to those with an interest in eel-breath) - the Dog's name
is definitely _not_ Diogenes.

Diogenes is probably the most famous of the Greek Cynic philosophers. The term
'Cynic' probably derives from the Greek 'kynikos', meaning 'dog-like'.
Diogenes rejected material luxuries, and espoused self-sufficiency and rural
living. He was basically a rebel, rejecting a society he saw as corrupt. As a
Cynic he also rejected philosophing as pointless, and advocated simple
goodness. Legends attached to him are that he lived in a barrel, that he
walked around the streets of Athens holding a lantern, trying to find an
honest man, and that he told Alexander the Great to 'get out of my sunlight',
if I remember right. :)
I don't think you have to read between too many lines to see that Murray Ball
is a bit of a Diogenes fan, and maybe deserves to be called a Cynic
philosopher himself, though I imagine he'd think that was an incredibly
pompous allegation :)
Oh yes... pictures of Diogenes often show him in a torn cloak, walking with a
Dog :)
