What's the significance of the name "Diogenes Designs"?

I have counter-proof.

About the time Murray Ball stopped drawing Footrot Flats, a correspondent to
the Wellington Evening Post suggested "Diogenes" as the dog's name, picking
up on the name Diogenes Designs.

Ball sent a two-frame cartoon (I have it scanned somewhere) to the paper in
reply. First frame: dog laughing hysterically - "Ha ha ha ha ha ...
Diogenes?! ... Hahahahaha." Second frame: dog dejected - "If only..." or
words to that effect.

We have the answer from the horse's mouth (as opposed to Horse's mouth, which
would only appeal to those with an interest in eel-breath) - the Dog's name
is definitely _not_ Diogenes.

Apparently dogs real name in written in one of the books. I am unsure of
which one or even if this is true. I am sure that it was one of the first
10. I have not been able to find it and we will probably never know

Diogenes is probably the most famous of the Greek Cynic philosophers. The term
'Cynic' probably derives from the Greek 'kynikos', meaning 'dog-like'.

Diogenes rejected material luxuries, and espoused self-sufficiency and rural
living. He was basically a rebel, rejecting a society he saw as corrupt. As a
Cynic he also rejected philosophing as pointless, and advocated simple
goodness. Legends attached to him are that he lived in a barrel, that he
walked around the streets of Athens holding a lantern, trying to find an
honest man, and that he told Alexander the Great to 'get out of my sunlight',
if I remember right. :)

I don't think you have to read between too many lines to see that Murray Ball
is a bit of a Diogenes fan, and maybe deserves to be called a Cynic
philosopher himself, though I imagine he'd think that was an incredibly
pompous allegation :)

Oh yes... pictures of Diogenes often show him in a torn cloak, walking with a
Dog :)

No I’m pretty sure that’s aunt Dolly’s tiny powderpuff.

I thought it was Cream Puff for a while, but that’s one of the Murphy’s dogs, sadly.

I’ve heard people say Sir Oliver Cromwell, and I’ve heard a few say Raupo (which is the town so not true), and the general consensus of people who remember seeing it say on or before book ten, but so far, the closest thing to proof I’ve heard is that Murray said he chickened out.

I’m kinda inclined to believe he did. Because if it WAS in one of the comics already, you’d better believe someone would’ve posted it up somewhere by this point, in excitement.

Knowing Aunt Dolly, it’s likely a regal sounding name, like Archibald. Heck, it may even be Princess Diana... As much as I love and respect princess Di, I’d have murderous tendencies for my namer if I was named that too.
