It's the first time I've seen it since I went to see it in the cinema and unintentional or not, Spider-Man 3 is easily the funniest movie of the Raimi trilogy. The restaurant scene with Bruce Campbell along with Tobey Maguire and James Franco's hammy acting just kill me.
I swear this isn't a troll job.

Even though Two had my favorite line from a Spider-Man movie that being Whoa... He just stole that guy's pizza!, three is so chock full of unintentional humor like Peter's dance down the street being the biggest one.

It's definitely hilarious in a "laugh at it, not WITH it" way. Though, I still wish it didn't exist.

Having just finished watching it, it is what it is. There's so many changes in tone throughout the film I'm surprised I didn't get whiplash from it.
Not to rip off Doug Walker but what he said is true in that you can't have a scene where Tobey Maguire plays a piano, dances over the bar and tries to pull Gwen Stacy immediately followed by Peter hitting Mary Jane.
I didn't remember them using Topher Grace's voice for when the Venom symbiote is in full effect but blimey I wish they hadn't. Ruined any intimidation factor for me when Venom spoke with that whiny voice.
Sandman was awesome though, and while I don't necessarily agree with retconning Uncle Ben's murderer the scenes with Marko and Uncle Ben were really well done.
I think that's the problem people have with this movie. There's flashes of brilliance throughout but it's overshadowed by the slapstick comedy. I don't expect Spider-Man to turn into Nolan's Batman or anything like that but if you're going to have a narrative that involves the light-hearted hero's dark side coming out then it needs to be done a little more seriously. It should be a BIG deal that all of a sudden Spider-Man and Peter Parker are acting completely differently from what they used to. The only time I really took it seriously was when Spidey went after Sandman in the subway station. I wanted to take the fight between Peter and Harry that ends with Harry's disfigurement seriously but I just couldn't because of the dialogue. I can tell the people making this film had fun doing it (aside from Kirsten Dunst) and while I enjoy their passion coming through, in terms of a story it's not really satisfying.
Like Vern said, it's funny in a laugh AT it not with it kind of way.

I do wonder what would have happened if Sony had let Raimi make the movie he wanted to.
I really wish they'd split the film into two parts like they were planning to. A real kick in the teeth now with all these two-part finales to movie series nowadays.
The thing I don't get is that they couldn't come up with a good climax to lead into the second part of this movie. What, did the symbiote landing on Eddie Brock in the church and Venom leaping at the camera not seem like a good enough cliffhanger?

John Jameson should have been Venom. Mary Jane left the poor guy at the altar. It would make sense that he'd be pissed off. He could have brought back the symbiote from the Moon or something. There was no need for Sandman or Gwen Stacy. They should have also added a line where Peter says that Norman killed himself and Harry says some shit like "deep down, I always knew....but it was easier to blame you", thus eliminating the need for the comically unhelpful butler at Osborn manor to exist (presuming he actually did and wasn't just a hallucination).
Peter could then start the film as the symbiote, but then get violent and injures Harry, and ultimately decide to get rid of it. It then joins John Jameson and he goes on a rampage. Realising that with John, the symbiote is too powerful, Peter asks Harry for help. Harry says no. Spider-Man fights Venom but is near defeat, only for Harry to save the day (dying in the process). Peter could then end the film giving up his Spider-Man persona and just settling down with Mary Jane, ending the trilogy conclusively.
Nice and simple.

I love how it has become the Batman and Robin of Spider-Man films. Just so utterly bad, in the best way possible. Very much up there in the so bad its good category

I agree with you 100%. It's easily my sentimental favorite film in the trilogy. It's absolutely hilarious at various parts, especially James Franco's acting.

I think you could probably take an editing axe to it, and make a pretty-good-to-great 80 minute movie.
The Sandman stuff is all really well done.

If they wanted to show the effect of the symbiote on Peter Parker, they should have modelled it on what red Kryptonite does to Clark in Smallville. He loses all inhibitions and becomes dangerous and primal. Show him stealing cars and motorbikes and going on joyrides, or drinking loads of booze, or doing coke, or telling Mary Jane to piss off while he goes looking for hookers, using excessive force against minor criminals, kicking the living shit out of Harry just for fun, and then becoming a nuisance to the city himself.
All of that would have been better than dancing.
If they HAD to have him dancing, then show him going to a nightclub where he takes ecstasy and nearly overdoses. Then he could wake up and clear his head and realize that he's done a lot of crazy shit. He can then go to the church, get rid of the symbiote, which just happens to fall on a despondent Jameson because it would be the same church he got jilted at by Mary Jane.

...or do what the Fox series did....make him basically like Spidey but moodier and more violent, escalating till he is totally losing control until it is almost too late. They had a ready-made story for it with Sandman being linked to Uncle Ben's death. Will Spidey kill Sandy for revenge under the black suit's influence? That's how the story should have climaxed, NOT with dancing.
Spectacular Spider-Man did the same route as the Fox series, BTW.

The one thing I will defend is Emo Parker.
That is Peter's idea of cool. He is a fundamentally uncool dude acting out his idea of cool, and it makes him look like a weird asshole because he's still a social weirdo.
