X-Men: For the Future
By Moon Cry
Professor Xavier looked around at each of his X-Men who were gathered around
him. Logan, Peter, Kitty, Ororo, Remy, Kurt and Rogue. They were standing
just
outside the small cemetery located on the grounds of the Xavier Estate. They
were all
dressed in street clothing, and for the first time since his return to the
mansion, they were all smiling.
"I want to thank each of you for joining me tonight. We've buried to many
friends
in this cemetery, I thought that it was about time to bury something of a
hopeful notion in it. I asked each of you to bring something that had a
significance with you tonight. I
want to place these items in a time capsule and bury it here in this cemetery.
We do this tonight because I hope that in the future someone will dig this up
and remember not only us, but all of those who fought for the dream". The
Professor motioned to Peter who was holding a large trunk. Peter placed the
trunk on the ground and opened it.
"Thank you Peter. My contribution to this time capsule is a picture of this
team
that Kitty recently took. I hope that those who find it see the friendship and
love that we
each have for each other". The Professor handed the picture to Ororo. She
looked at and smiled. Each of them were there smiling, laughing and hugging
each other. She placed in the box.
Kitty stepped up next. She was holding something wrapped in a towel. "I
asked
Jubilee to send this to me". She unwrapped her parcel to reveal a Bamf doll.
"It was
Illyana's". She had been afraid to bring it, she thought it might upset Peter.
But when she looked at him he was smiling. "I wanted people to remember that
many of us were
children who sacrificed our youth to help protect others". She walked over and
placed it
in the trunk.
She looked back at Peter and could see that he was fighting back tears, but he
was still smiling. He walked over to Logan, and Logan handed him a small
painting that he
had been holding. He stepped over to the trunk. "I painted this when I first
came to the
school". He showed it to everyone. The painting was a beautiful landscape of
the sun
coming up over a lake. "I want to put this in so that they will know that we
weren't just
warriors. I want them to know that we had hearts and souls". He placed it in
the trunk,
and walked back towards Kitty. She hugged him and patted him on the back.
Kurt moved up next. He dug into the pocket of his coat and pulled out a
baseball.
"I just want them to know that we had fun, that we took time out to play with
each other".
"You just want to remind all of us that your team ALWAYS wins", Rogue said,
and everyone chuckled.
"Well, that's just a benefit". Kurt winked at Rogue and placed the ball in
the trunk
along with the other items.
"I'll go next", Ororo said. She seemed to glide over to the trunk, and stood
next to
Xavier. She gently placed her hand on his and looked him in the eyes. "Many
years ago you came to me and asked me to join your X-Men. At the time I was
living as a goddess on the plains of Africa. I truly believed that I was one.
You showed me the truth, that I was a mutant, and more important a member of
the human race". She reached in to her pocket and pulled out a pressed flower.
"I brought this flower with me from Africa to remind me that of my roots. I
am putting it the trunk now to remind those in the future that we all come from
Mother Earth, and that we have all learned a little humility here". With that
she gently kissed the Professor on the forehead, and then placed the flower in
the trunk.
"Thank you Ororo", he replied, and a single tear formed in his eye.
Rogue walked over to the trunk next. "Ah wanted to put something in to the
chest
that would let those in the future know that we were all touched by one
another, if not
physically, then spiritually". She paused for a second and pulled off one of
the gloves
she wore. "I couldn't think of anything to put in it, except for one of my
gloves. I know
it may not have the impact that the rest of ya'lls will have but…." At a loss
for words, she placed the glove in the trunk, and looked back at her friends.
"Ah guess I just wanted to let ya'll know how I feel about ya". She then
turned to Xavier and said, "One day Ah hope Ah can kiss you for giving me a
home and a family".
"Someday child, someday".
Rogue walked over to Remy and motioned for him to go next. When he declined,
she pushed him into the circle, resulting in a few embarrassed giggles from
Kitty. "Well… Ah… I guess I wanted everyone to know dat dis place was a place
for second chances, non. So I decided to put dis into de box". He pulled out
a small gold cross from his pocket. "I always thought dat de cross stood for
forgiveness, dat's what I found here". With that he placed it into the trunk.
Rogue stepped up and hugged him.
"Well folks", Logan said as he moved into the center, "looks like I'm last man
standin again". He pulled a small length of think chain from his jacket
pocket. "Last
week in the Danger Room I cut this chain with my claws. When Chuck asked me to
get something I was at a loss for what to bring. So I figured a piece a cut
chain would do. Each link was a strong as all the others, it just happened that
one got cut". He threw the chain into the box, and pulled out a cigar.
"Do not even think about it Logan". Storm's eyes shot through him. He smiled
and placed it back in his pocket.
The Professor cleared his throat, and smiled, "Thank you all. Peter, Logan if
you
would please dig a hole for our time capsule". The two men grabbed a shovel
that was
leaning against a tree. They dug a hole as the others watched. When the were
finished, Rogue picked up the chest. But before she could place it in the
hole, a voice stopped her cold.
"What I don't get to add anything"? The group turned to see Marrow crouching
behind them.
It was the Professor who broke the silence. "Of course marrow, anything you
have to add would be most welcome". Marrow crept up towards Rogue, who placed
the
trunk on the ground. She reached beneath her costume and pulled out a crumpled
piece of paper. "Yeah well it isn't much, just something I found in a
magazine". Quickly she opened the chest and threw the paper in, and just as
quickly closed it. She looked back at her teammates and then darted back
towards the mansion.
Rogue bent down and reopened the trunk. She pulled out the wadded piece of
paper and looked at it. She then handed it to the Professor. He looked at it
and smiled. It had been torn out of a magazine. It was a photo of a cactus;
it must have just rained on the desert because he could see some moisture still
on the ground. At the base of the cactus, between the spikes that grew out of
the plant, was a small, pink flower. It was a gorgeous little blossom that had
bloomed out of the harsh desert. Written in black marker across the bottom
were four words in black marker.
It read, "Hope for the Dream".
