Hi guys,

i need some help deciphering the batman continuity. i have recently
started buying some old GNs of the batman series and i'm interested in
continuing my collection from the current point but i'm confused about
which comics actually form part of the continuity line and which are
seperate. any help?

is there anywhere that shows a definitive list of which GNs form part
of the continuity or what the continuity actually consists of so i can
direct my purchases in that direction for back issues/GN's

thanks for your help

You'll want to go in this order:

Batman: Year One
Knightfall 1 & 2
KnightsEnd
Prodigal
Contagion
Legacy
Cataclysm
No Man's Land 1-5
Evolution (New Gotham 1)
Officer Down (New Gotham 2)
Bruce Wayne: Murderer
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive 1 & 2

You may want to pick up the Crisis and Zero Hour trades,
if you want to get a grasp at where DCU continuity on the
whole has arrived. The above Bat-trades concern
themselves with the current, established continuity in
the Bat-books, from Zero Hour onward.

Unfortunately, no trade exists for Knightquest - the many
issues which came between Knightfall and KnightsEnd -
chiefly because there were buckets of them, and collecting
the lot would make for many a trade for which there may
not be too great a market. For more info on those issues,
read one of our faqs here:
http://www.mysecretshame.co.uk/bbb/faqs/comics.htm

Other helpful continuity issues include Batman #0 and
Shadow Of The Bat #0 (both came out during ZH in '94),
Batman Secret Files #1, and any other such Bat-SF-related
books.

I would add between Year One and Knightfall:

- Batman Year Two
- Batman Year Three
- Death in the family
- Killing Joke

Those will set the supporting cast in the Bat universe

As a general rule, any book that is marked as an Elseworlds is officially
not a part of continuity.

There are some books that reprint issues of LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT,
which is about cases from the early days of Batman's career and thus don't
infringe too much upon current continuity. Whether or not the stories are a
part of continuity at all depends on who you ask. DC's official stance has
always been that unless they tie it in with the other Batman books, the
stories in LOTDK don't "have" to be a part of continuity. However, most of
them don't contradict anything published earlier and so could be part of
continuity if you want them to be. A few of the LOTDK stories do contradict
earlier established continuity, and there is currently somewhat of a
division among fans as to whether those LOTDK stories are therefore not
within continuity or whether they represent a "retcon" where continuity was
retroactively changed.

Ah yes! Thanks for the adds - only difference is
that I wouldn't put Y2 in there, because it's out
of continuity, on account of all the Joe Chill
stuff, and the retcon in ZH.

Thanks for the heads up guys....it really helped.

The FAQ also answered a lot of my questions as well (probably why it's
there i guess!).

off to Ebay and some online comic stores to spend loads of money now
:o)

i think i'll just start buying the core titles first and see how i go.
i would imagine that they will advertise any crossovers into other
titles in advance to allow me to buy them, so that's my plan. i look
forward to speaking to you all again when i'm up to date.

thanks again

Year three isn't part of continuity either is it? Didn't Robin Year One see
to that? Big fat Zucco is current continuity as opposed to the Zucco in
Year 3.
