I thought this concept was great and was a pretty good story, but the
ending SUCKED! Seemed like it was written by a bunch of Supes writers
wanting to thumb their noses at Bats.

"Oh, he was horrible as that ichy batman...but finally the world is safe
with our Superman in goofy costume!"

Any other opinions? comments?

I totally agree! BUT, I did really like the alternate Batman costume.
That was way cool! Still, I think the writers did wimp out at the end.
Is having "Batman" as the earth's champion really all that bad a thing?
I don't think so!

Whaaa.... Batman is ANGRY when people do mean things! Let's make him
a SUPERguy who NEVER gets angry!

I agree.

The writer obviously don't understand Bats...with a few exceptions(Joker)
Batman usually stays pretty cool when taking on thugs. That's why he wins,
he's always in control.

I disagree...I thought it was a perfect ending. Remember it is Kal-el,
Not the adventures of Bruce on Krypton!

It served it's purpose as a combination of the two.

I thought the ending was terrible. What would have been wrong with
Batman being the world's champion of truth, justice, etc..., but I guess
that the change to Superman could have been used to symbolize
Bruce/Kal-El's coming to terms with his anger and getting on with his
life (by accepting Lois's love), as well as trying to take on a different
persona that people believed they could trust more than the Batman, who
had a reputation as a rogue. I also thought Lex Joker was a bad idea.
Why couldn't they have let him fight one of Supes or Bat's traditional
enemies, or at the very least combine two that would mix better (Ra's al
Lex would have been interesting, or maybe Brainiac Riddler). I still
liked the story, and the art (especially that great Batman costume) was
terrific. If only it hadn't fell apart and become predictable in the
end...

Just my thoughts.

I too really enjoyed this story. Bruce's sense of loss and hurt
combined with Clark's powers is a frightening thing, and without the
balance that either has achieved on his own, it could have been one
unsettling outcome, but it turned out well, with the best of each of
them coming through. Elseworlds are always supposed to be a true
representation of a single character, especially when in this case the
character was a combination of two.

If anything, this hero was *too* obsessive. He *was* supposed to be
Kal-El, whose inherent personality wasn't as obsessive as that of the "real"
Bruce Wayne.

Right, that was pushing it. They didn't even stop at two, really...not only
did Lex become The Joker, but among his weapons was a trick umbrella in The
Penguin's style...

<<anyone remember this same idea being done as a sidenote in ACTION Comics as
The Secret Life of Bruce Wayne? Much better version, I think.>>

Actually, it's been done several times. WORLD'S FINEST #136 featured
Batman going to a parallel universe where Kal-El *had* been adopted by the
Waynes, and grown up to become Superman (presumably, in this version he
*saved* his parents from Joe Chill). Which caused a lot of confusion on
Batman's part, because "Bruce" still looked exactly like the Clark Kent he
knew, right down to the glasses.
Several years later, WORLD'S FINEST #167 featured a Clark Kent who *did*
become Batman...because an early encounter with gold kryptonite had removed
his powers, so he *couldn't* save the Kents from a man who tried to rob their
store. He swore to spend his life fighting evil, and it helped that his rich
Gotham uncle adopted him and left him his fortune...but even then, he was a
lot less obsessive than "our" Batman. (Yet this universe *did* have a
Superman...and a genuinely heroic one, at that. Would you believe...Lex Luthor??!!)
