What I have found, and I'm being completely dispassionate and fair, is that
you're somewhat immature.
I've seen people attack you, sure, and by all means you have the right...
actually the DUTY... to respond in kind, but there has been times when
others have offered serious critiques of your work and you've immediately
become surly and offensive.
I don't know how old you are, and it doesn't matter how old you are, but you
seem to work on the intellectual level of a 15 year old.
Behaving like a spoiled brat, as this last post very clearly displays, is
neither constructive nor paricularly likely to increase your standing
amongst your peers.
You repeatedly cast aspersions on the talent of professional writers, and
having seen your scripts (enthusiastic though they are) they are not
'superior to anything X could write'. I say that as a third party, with no
interest in who is better than anyone else.
What do you hope to achieve by telling people that your work is the most
fantastic literary work in the Judge Dredd/Strontium Dog universe? This
attitude can be taken one of two ways.
First it can be seen as sheer arrogance, which endears you to no-one and
proves nothing.
Secondly it can be seen that you don't think that the people reading your
scripts are capable of comparing them to those that are already out there,
assuming there are other scripts out there. You're insulting the
intelligence of those you are posting at. I say at because your style
doesn't allow for debate, you make proclamations and broad statements....
People, scojo, can make their own minds up. You don't need to tell me that
your work is the best, I'm more than capable of establishing the voracity of
that claim for myself.
And now, to cap it all, you come on launching an obscene assault on all and
sundry, like some kind of maniacal cartoon character.
I would like to see other members of the board write a script, however your
level of maturity suggests that you would refuse to accept the opinion of
the board should they decide that another person had written a superior
screenplay to yours. This means that any attempt by another board member to
'make you eat your words' would be utterly pointless.
You'll probably see this as a personal attack, but you've never insulted me
directly and I have no reason to be rude or offensive to you. All I'm doing
is offering you an insight into how others on the board percieve you.
If any of the others disagree with me, feel free to let me know.

If you'll do my 50 hours-a-week job and look after my wife and family
I'll take you up on that.
Moo!
Hear, hear.
Like I said some time ago: you've got a brain, Scott. Use it properly.
You've got one chance at life and if you're going to waste it you might
as well slash your wrists now. The words "He was an immature twat" make
a very poor epitaph.
Moo. (That's a serious version of "Moo!")
Lets face it Scott you're not even a hack, a hack is a writer who
writes for money, you don't. How about instead of someone else doing
all the work you prove to us all you're not an arrogant, talentless
hack by actually getting paid for some work. It could be anything a
screenplay, a comic script, a column about gardening for the local
newspaper. Anything to prove you have indeed got what it takes to be a
'professional' writer at any level. You're very good at dishing out
challenges how about taking one yourself, or as I expect you to do
instead come up with some 'witty' comeback declaring yourself better
than any profession writer but never actually proving it.
You constantly criticise Andy Diggle but even if his work is good or
bad he's out there fighting the good fight instead out sitting in a
small corner of the internet bitching about everything.
We all know you can write a script but can you sell one?
Cheers

Very few pro writers are going to script an entire screenplay purely on spec
with little realistic chance of the thing getting commissioned.
It takes a long time. Time real writers will spend on more realistic
projects (and just maybe, a serious pitch document and treatment for a
screenplay)
People have tried telling Scojo exactly why his scripts aren't good enough,
but he never wants to listen. Everyone else is just wrong, they just don't
get it, they can't see how brilliant he is.
Who knows, maybe he's right.
The point is, if everyone says the script is crap, everyone will also say
the resulting film is crap, even if that means they don't get it. He doesn't
understand or want to understand this.
He wants to believe he is a writer and that, somehow, one day, he will be
aknowledged by the world as the greatest writer who ever lived etc etc etc.
What he does not seem to want to do is put in any of the work necessary to
make that happen.
We've all been down this road before. There is no point attempting to
explain the situation to him again, its been done hundreds of times and
every time he reacts the same way. He gets abusive and then leaves,
threatening never to return, only to do so with clockwork predictability
next time he has a "marvellous" new screenplay on the go. And the whole
thing starts again.
Add him to your filter, its the only way to save your sanity and save the
rest of us from this tedious onslaught. It's not particularly annoying, it
certainly isn't entertaining, just mind numbingly dull. It has cost this
group the participation of some of the brightest and wittiest people on
usenet, as well as some of 2000ad's most knowledgable and passionate fans
and it will continue to drain the eyes of this group as long as people keep
resonding.
I have no personal feelings against Scojo, I have no wish to stop him
writing. I'm also not going to offer him criticism, as he has demonstrated
that isn't what he wants. Whatever his reasons for what he does, I don't
care. I hope he has a happy and fulfilling life, but I don't want to read
his posts or replies to them any more.
Nessy
I feel the same way. But sometimes the sheer bloody mindedness of the
guy makes you want to delurk and try and reason with him. All
completely pointless and that's never going to happen - sort of like
catching fog in a jam jar. Kill-file options doesn't work because
people reply to him and then you're wondering what he's said that got
everyone so upset - best options is to completely leave the group
which I have done on several occasion.
Scott Nestel - just say No.

Has anyone ever seen Scojo and the Iraqi minister of Information in the same
room at the same time......??????
Scojo appears just as the Iraqi minister disappears.Think about it.
Now where's that number for the US Central Command.....
If it does I think I'll put it on my resume.

I love it how everyone just refers to that guy as "the Iraqi Minister of
Information", as if he doesn't have a real name. I don't know his name
either, but I'm pretty sure he has one.

It's more than Mr Nestel has done. So by definition you are more of a
professional writer than Scott. This is getting into name calling
territory so I'll stop :)

Really? Orlok's use was entirely logical - the Sov's want to get at MC-1,
so they execute the best asset they have for doing so? Hmmm....

And what else would she have done? Vienna Dredd raises an army of ex judges
to take control of MC-1! Yes, Inferno for the new millenium.

Evidence? Rico storyline will run and run - can you second guess where John
Wagner will take this character?

You'd have to contact the Iraqi Ministry of Information to find out, and
they'd probably deny everything.

Does it show that Si Spurrier has the ability to get things published?
Yes. You can't even get that far.
Does it show that you repeatedly bitch about something without even
spelling its title correctly? Yes.
>
> Who cares if that makes Si a so-called *professional writer*. Doesn't
> improve his writing, does it? Wow, he gets shit published. You think I

> Kewl? No way.
You don't have to respect anything, but most sensible people respect
the fact that a fan has shown an ability to pursue a goal, play by the
submission guidelines, and demonstrate a talent for writing several
different types of stories in different styles using his own
characters.
See, Scott, the quality of *any* story is arguable and debatable.
Each episode of Bec & Kawl leaves me unsatisfied -- I *know* there's a
good story in there, but the character designs and the fragmented flow
between panels really work against it. The art especially is a
problem -- Steve Roberts has a great line and he's very dramatic, but
his anatomy and perspective could use some work. So there, I don't
like it either, and don't rate it higher than a 4 on the "submit vote"
thingy on the page. And if you look at its average, that's about
where it stays, suggesting there is a wide range of opinions.
Considering how many people, like yourself, dislike it intensely,
there must be some 9s and 10s in there to balance it at a 4-5.
My point, lost there, is that your opinion about the quality of any of
the 2000 AD writers' work is not one grain more valid than anyone
else's. You rarely even prove that you can criticize or suggest
improvements for the future, you just bitch about what went "wrong" or
what wasn't done, or how such-and-such has been ruined.
The real sadness in your vendetta against 2000 AD is this, Scott: you
write fanfic. That's all. This does not give you the privilege of
superiority. I used to write fanfic teleplays myself -- it's how I
learned how to pace a TV script. I wrote imagined episodes of "Land
of the Lost" and the Adam West "Batman" series so that I could learn
how television is structured and paced. (One of the "Land of the
Lost" episodes, Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, is available online
at http://www.linkline.com/personal/enik1138/html/ggoggans.html).
Now, the difference between you and me is this: That was the best of
my teleplays and I think it's utter, utter shit. However, the
feedback I have received from LOTL fans has been uniformly positive.
People write me regularly to say how much they enjoyed it. I'm
pleased and flattered by the praise, but I know I don't deserve a word
of it.
You, on the other hand, think your Judge Dredd fanfic is the greatest
Dredd thing since sliced bread. The feedback you have received from
Dredd fans has been uniformly negative. You are infuriated by the
criticism and are convinced you deserve better.
Hmmmm.
Now, what I have done in the wake of my fanfic is write a variety of
things, including TV criticism, essays, music reviews for the Athens
newspaper (over 200 at $10 apiece, making me a professional), a novel
for young adult readers (which _was_ available online but I can't find
it now...), and my own comics, which I have sold to some success for
several years. Now the comics certainly have received their share of
criticism and complaint, ranging from my apalling art to the inclusion
of "superheroes," which alienates much of the potential small-press
audience. Nevertheless, I have taken what criticism I could and tried
to improve the way I tell my stories. However, people seem to keep
buying the things, and people keep asking me when the next issue will
be released (July), so I must be doing *something* right.
> Life is full of inequality. Those that rise to the top are not always
> the most talented. To suggest otherwise is a nonsense.
They are the most talented at rising. While the quality of their
output is always a source of debate, that they have a talent that got
them there is not. Among the things that contribute: humility,
acceptance, and a willingness to play by the rules. Consider them.
