I hadn't heard that Freddy had died.
You know how you read quotes from the old guys and they say things like, "The
really brilliant guy was ------- but nobody in the public ever got to see
how really funny he was and he died before having the chance to really make
it,"? Well, Freddy is the first comic I know who died that I feel that way
about.
I had a lot of experiences with him. We wrote together, we fought, we slept
on floors next to each other (just friends). Sometimes he distrusted me
because I wouldn't get high and he decided I must be a narc.
I hadn't seen him in a long time and frankly, the last time I saw him was at
a party at Michael Rosenberg's (Jackie Diamond) house and I avoided him
because he just wanted to keep talking about his career. But he was, in
truth, a beautiful man (despite a significant number of entertaining
adventures I could tell you about).
I once thought I had the vehicle to make him a star -- a sitcom based on the
Angel Toro wrestling character he used to do with Joey Gaynor. Maybe it
would have been the right vehicle if I had been a different person (or if he,
in some ways, had been. Of course, now I blame myself for not pursuing the
project.)
I didn't feel this way about Kinison and others who have passed on. (I wasn't
unmoved. I just didn't have this particular reaction.) I wanted to lay down
some thoughts because this is a man who deserves to be talked about.
If it turns out he isn't really dead, please inform me, so I can cancel this
message. I don't want anybody to see what a sensitive character I am unless
it's absolutely necessary.
