When Shimp was healthy and they had good direction/production, they
rarely had a bad short. Several of the later ones were weaker.
My picks for Best Shemp Shorts:
I would put Brideless Groom as number one, followed by Squareheads
of the Round Table, Hot Scots, and Punchy Cowpunchers. All these
are before 1952, when Shemp had his stroke and the McCollum/Bernds
duo left Columbia.

The worst Shemp short (and for
my money, the worst of all Stooge shorts) is "Coo-Coo on the Choo-Choo".
--------
Whoops I'm an Indian, Rhythm and Weep, Uncivil War Birds, Restless Knights,
Self Made Maids, and Sweet and Hot are all just as bad as Cuckoo on a Choo Choo
Thankfully, most of the 190 shorts the boys made are great.

Jim,
You seem like a 3 Stooges kind of guy, and you've stated before that
"Whoops, I'm An Indian!" is one of the Stooges' WORST films. The rest
of your "worst" picks seem reasonable (to me) except "Restless Knights"
and "Self Made Maids" which I find delightful, especially Shemp removing
the ants from his chin.
Back to the point, I won't argue all the great funny stuff about
"Indian!", but perhaps you would tell me exactly why you cast this short
in disfavor. Please don't let it be a politically incorrect thing.
Jamison -- "Ah, for you I have zee grand surprise."
Curly -- "So have I, if you only knew it!"

Political correctness has never been my vice. I just found Whoops I'm an
Indian to be stilted and barely amusing (I don't think any stooge short is
unbearable, but I do think this pales in comparison to others).
Restless Knights is my candidate for the weakest of the Curlys. It is slow
moving, contains few really funny scenes.
Self Made Maids is a horror, the idea of the boys playing various roles is
intriguing but they go nowhere with it.
With 190 shorts, the Stooges are going to have a few ups and downs.
Fortunately there are far more ups.

Shemp never had a stroke. That was Curly (in 1946 -- he died in 1952). Shemp
died suddenly of a heart attack in 1955, but his health didn't lack prior to
that.
Bernds and McCollum did leave Columbia for other pursuits in the early fifties.
Jim
You sure about this, Jim? A few sources state that Shemp had a stroke in the
early 50's, slowing down his timing a bit (though not as noticably as with
Curly). Unfortunately, the only immediate source I have for this is Jeff
Forrester's "The Stooge Chronicles," which is about as reliable as an Al
Goldman biography.

Absolutely sure. Shemp was in good shape until that sudden heart attack. His
timing is great in post-1952 shorts like Goof on the Roof, for instance.
Jim
I dunno....
In "Spooks", and around this period, Shemp seems very sluggish.
Definately not the Shemp of a year or two earlier.

According to his widow (quoted in Jeffrey Forrester's "The Stooge
Chronicles," Shemp did have a minor stroke in 1952. Actually
she refers to it as a cerebral hemorrhage. "After a while he was back
working with the boys again, going on tour...but he was never quite the
same
afterward. He was never a hundred percent perfect," she said.

Curly had one or two good performances after his first stroke, too!
Really? I read somewhere that "Scrambled Brains" was Shemp's fav....maybe I'm
wrong, but I know it's one of MY favs....
You're not all wrong. It was LARRY'S fave!

Yeah- there was LOTS of great stuff in BRIDELESS GROOM. Like:
1) "Gargle with old razor blades"
2) The phone booth scene ("Now look... now we ain't getting no place fast...
GET IT THE RIGHT WAY!!!!!")
3) Larry biting off his fingernails and spitting them out
4) "Cousin Basil!!!!"
5) Moe kissing Larry when the steward walks by ("Cut it out!!! <slap>)
6) The shaving scene ("Moe!! My head's cut off!!! My head's cut off!!!")
7) The final wedding scene ("You wouldn't hit a woman with that!!! Use this-
it's bigger.")
8) "Hold hands you lovebirds!"
Also- the woman that put Shemp's head in the vice had a pretty nice build on
her, huh?? <g>

Don't forget the next part of that scene.
"Oh, there I am, and as pretty as a picture".
Moe - "Yeah, of an ape"
