How come only Curly and Curly Joe were the only Stooges to overract to the
"Pop Goes the Weasel" tune? I've always wondered what Shemp would be like if
he had heard that song. Can't you just picture it:

Moe, Larry, and Shemp are bartenders at a poolroom, and then some gansters
come to hold up the place.

Moe: Hey, Porcupine! Play that Pop goes the Weasel tune!

Shemp: NO! Don't play that song! Whenever I hear it, something pop inside of
me! That I want to FIGHT!

Larry: Okay! Whatever you say! (Playing Pop Goes the Weasel on his Clarinet).

Shemp: Don't play it, Larry! Please! Stop! Don't play it! Don't
play.....hee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee! (jumps up and down) hee-bee-bee-bee-bee!
(punches out Moe).

Moe: Ouch!

Larry: (continues playing)...

Shemp: hee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee! (punches out and rams his head into the
gangsters, picks up a pool table and hits a remaining gangster over the head
with it breaking the table in half. Then does a back handspring and breaks
down a door.)

Larry: (stops playing). What happened?

Moe: (Walking up to Shemp): What's gotten into you? (slaps Shemp, then sees
all the gangsters knocked out). Say, kid! You're a hero!

Shemp: It's that "Pop the Weasel"! Whenever I hear it, something goes POP!

That could've been one hilarious gag! That is if they would have used it
with Shemp, too! Anybody agree?

The idea of a stimulus which results in a Stooge going berserk is a
consistent theme for Curly. Think of tassels, wild hyacinth perfume and
cheese, as well as that weasel tune. I'm not sure whether this idea was
used for any other third Stooge--can anybody think of any shorts where it
was?

It was never done in a Stooge flick, but Shemp did it in his own series. In 1945
he made a short at Columbia called "Fling in the Ring" which was a remake of "Punch
Drunks." By the way, the fighter he knocks out in this short was played by Joe
Palma, who later played "fake Shemp" in those four Stooge shorts made after Shemp
passed on but prior to the advent of Besser.

If you want to see how Shemp would've handled this bit, get a copy of "Fling in the
Ring."
