For the list -

Shemp was the original third stooge for their early movies with Ted Healy
but he left the act just prior to the stooges leaving Healy and starting
their separate career in film shorts. Jerry "Curly" Howard joined the act
at that time.

From a historical and chronilogical point of view Shemp was the original
third stooge, but many inquiries about this don't always clearly define
whether they mean "for all time" or for just the short subjects series of
films.

From the short subjects series point of view, Curly was the "original"
followed by Shemp when he later rejoined the act.

Only those who have read the stooge autobiographies to some extent would
even know about Ted Healy and the act before the short subjects began.

The time line would be:

According to a reference book I've got around here somewhere, Curly Howard
began to suffer failing health at some point and Shemp Howard was asked to
temporarily replace him in the trio. Until then Shemp had enjoyed some
success in movies, and can be seen fairly frequently in Marx Brothers and
other similar films. I think I even saw him once in a Jerry Lewis film, but
I'm not sure.

Anyway, I don't think the replacement was meant to be permanent, but more or
less was. Later on, of course, they tapped two other fellas, Joe Morita (Joe)
and another Curly Joe to be the third stooge. Personally I never liked either
of those two. The original Curly and Shemp were a riot, but the last two
could never make me crack a smile.

By the time Joe DeRita and Joe Besser joined into the Stooge group,
all the actors were beginning to show their age, and the plotlines
began to wear a little thin. It is probably a lot harder than even I
would think to get something new and fresh out of the four millionth
pie-in-the-face, or pratfall.

Shemp was before Curly. Shemp quit. Curly took his place. Then started
the famous film shorts. Curly died. Shemp replaced Curly.

Joe Besser was hilarious.

One advantage to being a Joe Besser fan is that when you decide to
hold a convention for the "Joe Besser Fan Club", you won't have to
rent a convention center (a dorm room will hold everyone).

Shemp, in fact, WAS the original third stooge before curly, but these
were the days with Ted Healy, before their contract with Columbia was
signed. The first "real" 3-stooges episode was in 1934, titled
"Woman-Haters", which had curly as their 3rd stooge. Next time, check
the FAQ!

I say, how rude! Maybe the person asking, like myself, does not know the
location of the FAQ. I have no clue where it is and I do not recall it
being posted anytime recently.

To elaborate on this point:

Yes, Shemp was the original third Stooge with Moe and Larry under Ted
Healy. He made one motion picture with the Ted Healy Stooges, "Soup to
Nuts."

After "Soup" The Stooges split form Healy and formed a vaudeville act. A
couple of years later Healy convinced Moe and Larry to return but Shemp
would have none of it. Moe called in Curly as a replacement and they did
one year of work at MGM before Healy and the Stooges split for good.

The day they split with Healy, the Stooges were signed with Columbia. The
rest is history.

For the record, the original trio of Moe, Larry and Shemp appeared with
Ted Healey in the 1930 Fox release "Soup to Nuts." This was the first
time the Stooges appeared in a film.

Just to clarify a few points...

Shemp never appeared in a Marx Bros. movie. but he did appear in movies
with Abbot & Costello and at least one movie with WC Fields.

Okay, once and for all: the original trio were Moe, Larry and Shemp.
Shemp left in 1932 and was replaced by Curly. Curly retired following a
stroke in 1946 and Shemp returned. Shemp died in 1955 and was replaced by
Joe Besser, who quit in 1958 and was replaced by Joe DeRita. Joe Palma
was an unbilled stand-in for Shemp in four films made after Shemp's death
and Emil Sitka was to have replaced Larry in 1971, but never appeared on
film as a Stooge.

Confused?
