Uncle R.
don't be surprised if that turns up on the Family Channel...they ran an
episode with the trio in blackface singing "Way Down Yonder in South
Brooklyn."
This was the episode:
83. Three Pests in a Mess (1945) ****-
---------------------
Director: Del Lord
Cast : Vernon Dent, Vic Travers, Snub Pollard, Christyne
MacIntyre, Brian Ohara
The stooges are three inventors trying to a get a patent on their
preposterous fly catching invention. When they learn they'll have
to catch 100,000 flies to earn enough to get a patent, some crooks
overhear and think the boys are the $100,000 sweepstakes winners.
When the crooks give chase, the stooges hide in a sporting goods
store where Curly shoots a dummy, which they mistake for a real
person. The boys decide to bury the "body" in a pet cemetery, but
the cemetery owner arrives from a costume party with his partners,
all dressed as spooks, and they proceed to scare the devil out of
the stooges.
The scene you're talking about is when Christine MacIntyre just found out that
Curly isn't the guy who won the money, so she is throwing him out, and in the
process, throws an ink bottle at him. He ducks, right as Moe opened the door,
and Moe gets it in the face. He wipes his face off and turns and bumps into
Larry. Larry, says "Hey, what's the idea, Porter?" He then realizes it's Moe
and lets out one of those fantastic Larry-laughs. Then he gets down and says
(a-la blackface) "Mammy!" Moe gets down with him and says "Pappy!" and smacks
Larry.
BUT......
In the PC version that I have from one of the WTBS marathons, the scene is cut
and Larry says "Hey, what's the idea?" The next thing you see is Moe slapping
Larry.
I think it loses a little when they choppa choppa.
The ink in the eye through the keyhole was from "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb"
and it's the hotel detective that gets an eyeful of ink (or maybe you are
thinking of another).
All the best,
Dave
no, the episode (ok, I forget the name of it too) was when they
developed the fly catcher and needed to catch 100,000 flies to get a
patent for it. Christine McIntyre, working with swindlers, thought
they won a $100,000 lottery.
Christine threw a bottle of ink at Curley, who ducked and hit Moe as
he was walking in the door. Moe stumbles backwards into Larry, who
yells, "what's the idea, Porter?..(pauses, then laughs when he
realizes who it is. He then drops to a knee...etc...)

Dave and all,
That bottle of ink shattering on Moe's forehead just absolutely has me in
stitches every time I see "Three Pests in a Mess!" To me, it is one the best
sight gags of all. I have run through that scene frame by frame, and it looks
*absolutely* real! It's one of those classic Stooges "how did they pull that one
off" scenes!
Not to be overlooked, Curly's performance in the short is vintage, high-energy
Curly, even though it is one of the last few shorts (1945) that Curly appeared
in before multiple strokes forced him from the act.
Anyway, just prior to the ink bottle incident, Curly skips across the room with
one of his priceless falsetto cackles, and then after Christine MacIntyre rips
about six shirts off Curly looking for heart tattoos on his chest, she gets down
to a metal vest, which Curly beats on Tarzan style and proclaims, "That's it -
you hit the bottom!" Does anyone know if Curly's first stroke occurred after
"Three Pests in a Mess" was produced?
Thanks, you lame brains!
Rick "Muttonhead" Carroll
Oh yeah! - I remember the line when Curly opens and reads the letter from
the patent office: "Dear Jack - hah, look how he spells 'Jack', J-E-R-K!"
