I remember reading that they named the short "three Little Pigskins"
because they lost the oscar to a Three Little Pigs short.

I think this unlikely. I don't think animated and live action shorts ever
had to compete together.

Does anyone know more about this? And while we're at it, what picture DID
the Stooges lose to?

According to the Three Stooges Scrapbook, they lost to an RKO musical
called "La Cucharacha".
