I've just received news that Ed Bernds passed away over the weekend. Can
anyone confirm this or provide additional details?

Boy I wish that some people would think twice before posting a message.
Please, would everybody ask themselves some questions before typing. Such
as, will the rest of the group learn anything from what I am posting? Will
my question or statement generate some good conversation about an important
subject? Or will my posting just waste someone's time?
How does everyone feel about this? Am I being too picky?
I feel frustrated when I click on a post to see the answer to an important
question, only to read something irrelevant to the question.

Jim

From the 5-22-00 online edition of Variety --

Edward L. Bernds

Pioneer sound recordist Edward L. Bernds, who also made his mark as a
prolific B movie director and for such franchises as Three Stooges,
Blondie and Bowery Boys films, died Saturday at his home in Van Nuys.
He was 94.

Bernds helmed 25 Three Stooges shorts and two of their 1962 feature
films, "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules" and "The Three Stooges in
Orbit," as well as parts of their TV series, "The New Three Stooges"
during the mid-1960s.

He served as Frank Capra's regular sound mixer from 1930 through 1939,
working on such classics as "Lady for a Day," "It Happened One Night"
and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

Bernds also worked at Columbia with Howard Hawks, where he served as
the sound recorder for "Twentieth Century" and "Only Angels Have
Wings."

Born in Chicago, Bernds was a pioneer radio operator in his hometown.
As a result, he was brought out to Hollywood in 1928 by United Artists
to assist with the transition to sound.

In Hollywood, Bernds served as the sound mixer on Douglas Fairbanks
Sr.'s first venture into sound (a speaking prologue) for "The Iron
Mask" (1929) and was sound mixer on D.W. Griffith's early partial-
talkie "Lady of the Pavements" (also 1929).

Bernds also recorded the sound for Mary Pickford's first talkie,
"Coquette" (again 1929), which garnered her a best actress Oscar.

He made his feature directing debut at Columbia in 1948 with "Blondie's
Secret," one of five "Blondie" films he helmed.

He left Columbia in the early 1950s for Allied Artists where he
directed several Bowery Boys films.

In later years as a freelance director he helmed such films as "Reform
School Girl" (1957) and "Return of the Fly" (1959).

He also directed episodic TV, including "Colt .45" and "Sugarfoot."

Bernds retired in 1965. His wife, Bathsheba, died in 1992.

In 1998, he was honored by the National Board of Review with its
Lifetime Achievement Award for Film Technology and in 1999 he received
the Cinema Audio Society's President's Award.

He is survived by his son, two grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.

Services were private.

Normally I say post what you want, but in this case I agree
completely.

Actually Jim,
I found your post to be the only off-topic one in this thread. The
others were all concerned with posting info or asking questions about Ed
Bernds and related persons.
Now wake up and go to sleep.

I will make a few calls and find out for sure as soon as possible and let
everyone know. Ed was a friend of mine and was very helpful with various books
and articles I have written. He had been in failing health for some time.

Actually Alan,
Your incorrect, I felt that I had to say something to help prevent it in the
future.
My post only referred to the following statement "That really WOULD be news

to me....thought all of these guys
would've passed away a long time ago......"
My question to you Alan is, do you think that this statement is "off-topic"?
The question by Gary was a serious one about the possible passing away of
someone who meant alot to Stooge Fans.

Regards, Jim.

If you recall in my first post, I did question if I was being too picky.
Well perhaps I am. Lets leave it at that and call it a night. Besides,
it's time to watch a Stooges short.
Regards, Jim.

Hi Jim,
That is also the sentence I was referring to. I don't think that
sentence was off topic. . It was a general remark concerning Ed Bernds
and, "all of these guys" who worked together on the Stooges shorts.
