The idea was for a network of fast and comfortable transnational trains that would be attractive to businessmen and other regular travellers.[3] All trains were first-class-only and required payment of a special supplement over the normal first-class ticket price, the amount of which depended on the distance covered.[3] Where possible, TEE trains' schedules were timed to allow a business traveller to make a round trip (return journey) within a single day and also have time for business activity at the destination.[3] Each train was named, and all were expresses, stopping only at major cities. Some of the named trains had already existed for some years before creation of the TEE network and were simply newly designated as Trans-Europe Expresses in 1957 or later. For example, the Settebello had been in operation since 1953[3] and the Rheingold since 1951 (as a revival of a pre-World War II train). The network was launched in 1957 with trains serving 13 different routes.[1]

The signing took place during a conference organised by German federal transport minister, Mr Andreas Scheuer, on 17 May, and includes a number of pledges which expand the initial TEE 2.0 concept.[12]

In themid-1950s, the European economy picked up speed again, and the western Europeancountries began to establish new relationships after the devastation of theSecond World War. In this context, eight European rail companies decided tointroduce a joint train offer: the Trans-Europ-Express, TEE for short. Themodern express train network was intended to connect the European metropoliseswith one another and, in particular, offer the wealthy business travelers ofthe economic miracle an alternative to car and air transport. For this new typeof traffic system, the Deutsche Bundesbahn procured several multiple units withtype VT 11.5 railcars, which were put into operation in June 1957, later alsolocomotive-covered trains were used. With this decision, DB made history. For15 years the German diesel multiple units were used as TEE and shaped the imageof international express train traffic like no other train set.

The VT11.5, later 601 had two motor units at the head and the tail of the train. Eachone had an 809 kW diesel from MTU and a hydraulic transmission from Voith orMaybach. The maximum speed was 140 km/h (87 mph), later 160 km/h (99 mph). Allcoaches were air-conditioned.
