I knew Arthur Lake. He told me that Jonathan Hale left the post as Dithers
over a money squabble. He didn't like being typecast, and found little work
after. He committed suicide in 1966.
Lake thought Jerome Cowan, who replaced Hale, was not believable enough. He
felt Hale's leaving the act was a real blow to the series.
I always rather liked Cowan (as Radcliffe) but also enjoyed Hale.

He had small roles on occasion. I think he was in one of the three episodes
that George directed.

All 28 of them are on VHS...at least they're still being advertised by
Movies Unlimited.

Didn't Hale have a drinking problem, or am I thinking of someone else?
BTW, you can spot Hale in Hitchcock's STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, in one
interior long-shot as Robert Walker's much-despised father.
And as Jim undoubtedly knows, he's the "Governor" who shares two
scenes with Roy Rogers in the marvelous SON OF PALEFACE (though he
doesn't get any billing).
