I have been told that through the years there were seven stooges. The
names I have heard are as follows:

Larry (played by two different actors thru the years)
Moe
Curly
Joe
"curly joe"
Shemp

Were there ever any other stooges? What about the other actor who
played Larry? Does anyone know his name?

The "official" count is 6 per the above.

After Larry suffered a stroke and was unabl to continue with the act,
Emil Sitka was asked to join the act to replace him. He was to have
played a character called "Harry". Only a few publicity photos exist of
this planned partnership.

However at approximately the same time, Moe learned that he was
terminally ill with cancer so the act never got off the ground. Moe
retired to complete his autobiography and died May 5, 1975.

The addition of Emil would have made the Stooge count "7". However,
since they never appeared with Emil as the Stooges, there is great
debate amongst fans as to whether Emil was a real stooge or simply
destine to be one.

Emil played a straight man for the boys for many years having first
appeared in a short with Curly as a butler. This was also Curly's last
short interestingly enough and the only time the two worked together as
far as I know. He appeared many times with Shemp as a professor,
socialite, or minister with wavy hair and sometimes thick stage glasses.
He is known for his line "Join hands you love birds" in one of the
shorts. Each time he recites the line while attempting to marry Shemp,
he gets clocked over the noggin. The line appears on his grave marker
stone.

He also played in most if not all of the feature films, notably as the
professor in "3 Stooges in Orbit." He also appeared in live action
clips that supplemented the Stooge cartoon series.

You can see much of his material at <http://www.emilsitka.com> which si
maintained by the late actor's son. Sitka died just a few years ago at
age 85.

Sitka is referred to as "The Fourth Stooge" and is beloved by many in
the newsgroup.

I also count six, their names being:

Moses Horwitz (Moe Howard)
Jerome Horwitz (Curly Howard)
Louis Feinberg (Larry Fine)
Samuel Horwitz (Shemp Howard)
Joe Besser
Joe DeRita (Curly Joe)

The only "Seven Stooges" I've heard of was a band that made a novelty
song called "I wanna be your dog"; I have it on a collection of songs from
Rhino Records. It's an imitation of Larry, Moe, and Curly doing a punk rock
song.

There was also Ted Healy in the Beginning when the Act was "Ted Healy and
the Three Stooges". I never knew that Emil Sitka was Considered to be a
Stooge after Larry had a Stroke in 1970. However I read in one of the Threes
Stooges Biography Books that Moe's Youngest Brother Jack;( Younger than
Curly I believe) a retired Insurance salesman was Considered for a Stooge
around this same time. Imagine the Three Stooges as Moe, Harry, and Jack.
They Really would have been Confused with the Pep Boys, Then.

You may be thinking of Joe Palma, who doubled for Shemp after his death. No
other actor played Larry.

He may be referring to Emil Sitka who would have played "Harry" as a
Larry replacement in the 70s, but Moe discovered his terminal illness
and the act broke up at that point.

I had a copy of a lone publicity image showing this expectation but lost
it in a hard drive crash last may.

This may seem a morbid question, but does anyone know how Irving died? I
think Curly sure looked a lot like him.

I have a few Stooges books around here (I forget which ones) that have
pictures of both Irving and Jack.I think that Curly looks like Irving,
while Jack looks more like Shemp/Moe.

Solomon also appeared in a bit as a Barber in one of Shemp's Vitaphone
shorts. I don't know the title, but I've seen the still.
