LOS ANGELES (AP) - Edward Bernds, one of Hollywood's first sound engineers who
went on to direct Bowery Boys and Three Stooges movies, died Saturday. He was
94.
Bernds came to Hollywood in the late 1920s during the advent of talking
pictures.
He handled sound for Frank Capra's classic films of the 1930s - including ``It
Happened One Night'' and ``Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.''
Bernds later directed eight of the Huntz Hall and Leo Gorcey Bowery Boys romps.
Next came the Three Stooges - with such films as ``The Three Stooges Meet
Hercules'' and ``The Three Stooges in Orbit.''
Bernds' role as a pioneer in motion picture sound was recognized with a special
award for technical achievement from the National Board of Review of Motion
Pictures.
Ed Bernds was a helpful friend of mine for over twenty years. He was always
ready to give me needed quotes for an article on old Hollywood. And as much as
he told me about his career over the years, I still found more interesting info
in his book Mr Bernds Goes To Hollywood (Scarecrow Press).
I realize nobody lives forever, but I hate to see him go.
