A Firesign chat: If my memory's faulty, then I could be in real trouble

November 13,2005
BY Mike Dewey
Sun Journal Staff

Thirty-one years ago, the Firesign Theater released a record called,
presciently enough, Everything You Know Is Wrong. It was - as I'd come
to expect from them in my late teens - visionary, subversive,
revolutionary and very funny stuff.

To this day, in fact, my brother sometimes calls me "Nino," a tribute to
Nino Savatte, AKA "The Mindboggler," a featured character on that album.

I listen to those LPs all the time and take comfort in knowing all about
Nick Danger, Hemlock Stones, Young Guy Motor Detective, George LeRoy
Tirebiter, Malcolm X John Lennon, Rocky Rococo, Mudhead, Art
Wholeflaffer, Ralph Spoilsport and Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Smith from
Anytown, USA.

But it's the title of that 1974 disc that's consumed me for the last few
days and nights or so.

Everything.

You.

Know.

Is.

Wrong.

...
[middle part, where he talks about misremembering things that
didn't happen the way he remembered]
...

Let's get back to the Firesign Theater and close with the title of
another fine record: How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're
Not Anywhere at All?

Good question.

Mike Dewey can be reached at mde...@freedomenc.com or 645-5674.

It always has struck me that the most uncannily prophetic thing about
EYKIW is that some guy living in a trailer in the desert would be
"broadcasting" (albeit via a series of LPs rather than all-night radio)
about the alien invasion, alternative American history, underground
civilizations, etc. But I suppose Art Bell might've used the album as
his business plan.

Just don't turn the radio 'on' while driving your dipstick.

It's pretty good, though I haven't listened to it for a while.
The story doesn't wander as wildy as a typical FT album, which
is a bit of a minus.

Power started out as a serial for John Hockenberry's wondrous radio show
Heat which was on NPR in 1990. I think Lodestone may carry this show. As I
recall it was also serialized on Bergman's RFO site. Although the show
ended, they tried to resurrect it with a new episode on Bergman's even
shorter lived Digital Diner show (2 episodes). Perhaps its something they
plan to resurrect in the future. It's the only "Firesign" work I can think
of that is so dedicated to mocking "Hollywood" and its excesses, which I
find limiting.
