<uhmeow> well, all ads are
<uhmeow> the ads in Dwarf most carfully structuered into the disc, perchance
<Dexter_Fong> I share Bunny's view...I try to appreciate each piece of
work on it's own
<uhmeow> they were always into commercial parodies, from before being
the firesign theatre
<Bunnyboy> I remember, years ago, a fellow Firesign fan giving a quick
listen to GIVE ME A BREAK (P & B), and commenting that Phil and Pete
seemed to be recycling some old FST ideas. Still loved it, though.
<kend^> it's such a rich field from which to harvest, ad agencies are
great at making "parody-able" commercials
<uhmeow> how did the topic come up? i just stumbled into it, and always
delighted to be talking about The Firesign Theatre on alt.firesign IRC!
<uhmeow> thats why adbusters has been such a hit, kend
<Dexter_Fong> "And we'll be right back after this commercial interuption"
<uhmeow> i was writing ads that were parodies of other ads in 1958/9
<Bunnyboy> All old, except for me! I'm ready for my closeup, Mister DeMille!
<uhmeow> for one of Ralph Spoilsport's competitors
<Dexter_Fong> Bun: Step back into the swimming pool please
<uhmeow> you're Professionally young, bunny

<kend^> my kitties have learned how to "knock" on the door. i keep them
upstairs most of the time and they want out
<Bunnyboy> lo bri
<DocTechnical> re eobe: the biggest problem i have with it is the way it
was mastered - way too soft through 95% of the album, then when "player"
(bergman) goes off the disk ("what the faaaaaaaaa......") it gets
ear-piercingly loud - i always have to lunge for the volume control at
that point
<kend^> hi brian
<Dexter_Fong> Hi Brian
<bfwestley> hello, can't stay long, I'm making DVD
<uhmeow> you're right, doc
<bfwestley> s
<uhmeow> why, it's b. fuckin westly!
<DocTechnical> hey bf

<uhmeow> you can make your own dvds with your computer, like burning
cds, bf?
<DocTechnical> well you know what they say ... make dvd while the laser
shines...
<kend^> lol, doc
<DocTechnical> hey, let's all make him an op!!!
<Dexter_Fong> Operation Op
<uhmeow> yeah, i'm qwondering if i should upgrade the dell, if that's
possible or just get new hardware to do that with the flick i['m
shooting in saskatchewan in a few weeks
<kend^> op-timum reflexes here
<DocTechnical> cat: bf's got a mac, that's one of their selling points
<uhmeow> aha
<uhmeow> but i can still get hardware to do that on the new dell, eh, doc?
<Dexter_Fong> And it's a really big Mac
<uhmeow> or do i have to send it back to indiana for wherever the fuck
it comes form
<Dexter_Fong> A Mac Royale
<DocTechnical> ...with special sauce...
<kend^> cat, you can install damned near anything you want by yourself
<Dexter_Fong> That won't upset your stomach
<uhmeow> if only that were true
<Bunnyboy> I got turned on to a GREAT site the other day. It's The
Institute of Good Cheer, featuring online clips from a fabulous book
called The Gallery of Regrettable Food.
<Bunnyboy> http://www.lileks.com/institute/
<Bunnyboy> A Royale with Cheese.
<Dexter_Fong> Mac au Frommage
<Bunnyboy> Speaking of DVDs, the new Pulp Fiction Special Edition smokes!
<kend^> cat, grab some 14-year old kid off the street, promise him a
joint, he will install it for you
<kend^> make sure he does the install BEFORE you pay him though :)
<DocTechnical> you have options cat - since you bought the onsite
service contract, you should look into whether you can get them to do
the upgrade right at your place (you'll have to pay for the hardware of
course, and maybe even labor, but at least the outfit doing the upgrade
is the same one that you have the contract with - so they presumably
know what they're doing - and it's possible that by doing it that way
you won't void the warranty.
<Bunnyboy> It's packed with features, including enhanced DVD-ROM treats.
<Dexter_Fong> Wear your Priests outfit too, Cat
<DocTechnical> riiiiight k^
<DocTechnical> is that anything like doggie treats?
<DocTechnical> tape a cardboard star to a stick too
<uhmeow> yeah, i didnt spend nearly enough moneyh on this dell
<uhmeow> i should have bought mr. dell to come here to my office to do
my computing for me
<Bunnyboy> Speaking of cheese, which I am usually loathe to do (not a
fan), I had my first taste of Jarlsburg yesterday. Omigod, it's GOOD!
<uhmeow> i'm so overwhelmed by the software from doc i can barely move
<kend^> oh yeah, bun, like swiss with an attitude if i recall correctly
<uhmeow> jarl them bergs, man
<DocTechnical> yeah, i really threw a lot at you there ... take it on in
small chunks, that's the best way to go about it
<Bunnyboy> kend^: Smoky, nutty and not the least bit rank.
<uhmeow> the titantic is to iceberg as what is to jarlsburg?
<uhmeow> on the sat for the terminally firesonian
<kend^> norway?
<Bunnyboy> lettuce?
<DocTechnical> cows?
<Bunnyboy> pork?
<DocTechnical> pork?
<Dexter_Fong> Ken: Not Norway, either way
<Bunnyboy> Kind of!
<uhmeow> the cheese that sank a penninsula?
<uhmeow> it's norway or the highway
<kend^> neitherway, norway, who cares?
<Dexter_Fong> Jarl
<DocTechnical> cheese logs?
<kend^> jarl is norse for "earl", as in quasi-royalty
<Dexter_Fong> From the Baltic
<Dexter_Fong> with love
<Bunnyboy> Me ma is off to Norway in mid-September.
<uhmeow> nordene way, for the talkative yet reticent
<Dexter_Fong> I ken that laddie
<Bunnyboy> Blessings of Ken Nordine.
<Bunnyboy> And on him.

<Bunnyboy> Steer with your ears...
<uhmeow> i wonder if he ever worked with lord buckly?
<uhmeow> imagine ken, lord and lenny all together on one stage, babbling
at each other
<kend^> or even wm. f. buckley?
<Dexter_Fong> Cat: I wonder if anyone ever worked with Buckly
<DocTechnical> i love ken nordine's stuff...
<DocTechnical> how are things in your town?
<uhmeow> with harpo max
<DocTechnical> d_f: that's more like it
<Dexter_Fong> He was the quiet one
<uhmeow> and you have: the firesign theatre
<Bunnyboy> Extreme Harpo, to the max!
<DocTechnical> he was lord of his own world
<kend^> dt: as we all should be :)
<uhmeow> the japanese aesthetic concept of mu, the silence you need as
context for the noise
<Dexter_Fong> DT: Huh?
<Bunnyboy> cat: Nope. Not even Ossman's voice is THAT low!
<DocTechnical> fred did a nice write up on him in a past firezine issue
<kend^> i had a friend give me a very zen-like concept: if you aren't in
the center of your own world, then move your boundaries
<DocTechnical> d_f: i was agreeing with you re "I wonder if anyone ever
worked with Buckly"
<Bunnyboy> Any recent word on Freditor? Wounds all licked?
* Dexter_Fong wonders also if anyone ever worked with Tim Buckly
<DocTechnical> be here now ... if not, get there later!
<uhmeow> there was a radio show they did in late 68m, forget name, may
have been radio free oz or something on kmet, where i was also working
at the time. anyway, they ended this show with a moment of silence. just
dead air. may be why the show was cancelled shortly thereafter but at
the time, it was Exquisite!
<DocTechnical> bb: licked but not healed
<DocTechnical> exquisite air
<uhmeow> yeah, heals are a bitch. ask achilles
<uhmeow> no, that zen garden kind of thing, doc
<Bunnyboy> I gotta go bake some fish for my honeybunny. Nite, clan.

<Dexter_Fong> Night Bunny

<bfwestley> NPR has really helped web site hits with their front page

<DocTechnical> that's like john cage's "4:33" - on stage, a grand piano.
a guy walks on, sits at piano, opens piano lid, plays nothing for 4
minutes and 33 seconds, then closes the piano lid and walks off
<DocTechnical> nite bb
<bfwestley> nite bb
<DocTechnical> bf: i guessed that would happen
<kend^> doc: someone else put a 1 min. cut of silence on a cd, cage sued
for copyright infringement!
<Bunnyboy> John Cage, wonderous musicologist and mycologist.
<DocTechnical> glad to see it happening
<DocTechnical> for real
<Bunnyboy> I did my John Rice-prodded duty and e-mailed All Things
Considered today.
<DocTechnical> k^: that's a great story! i love it!
<uhmeow> ossman did a tribute to him for npr. lost job not long after that
<DocTechnical> bb: yeah, he is sorely missed

have it in his vast library. ask him
<DocTechnical> no, cat, the cage thing. he did that for npr in 68?
<Dexter_Fong> BF: For a Comedy album and for one that's not affiliated
with SNL, that's pretty good, yes?
<uhmeow> lots of firesign stuff i've never heard, like the Ayerie piece
they did also for npr, you have thast, right, dex?
<uhmeow> i'd love to hear that
<DocTechnical> i didn't know he worked for npr in '68 - or was that
through wbai?
<kend^> did npr exist in 68?
<DocTechnical> don't mind me, i'm just confused
<uhmeow> no, the washington dc station
<Dexter_Fong> Cat: Since Fred released it...well, I promis to make a

<uhmeow> good for lodes
<Rotonoto> it's the mother lode
<Dexter_Fong> Yeah...good all around

it was peter bergman and friends, and they played music in between the

<uhmeow> this was a 4 hour radio show they did in 67. bergman's show

free oz started back in '66 and ran through - what, '69?

<Rotonoto> lord buckley- there's matress on this money!
<uhmeow> they brought in lit from their earliest shows, and riffed on it

successful but the lads were pushing the enevelope.

<uhmeow> where is klok? the only regular here cogniscent enough to laugh
at my julian jaynes joke
<DocTechnical> hey has - i assume you've seen the film "man of the
century" - ifc has been playing it. what a riot..
<DocTechnical> they did a great job with the dialogue in that one
<HasNoName> the one with Johnny Twenties?
<DocTechnical> yeah, no klok 2nite
<DocTechnical> probably difficul techniculties
<uhmeow> at least he has a job
<HasNoName> Sadly, I don't have IFC, but I saw it in a theater a couple
of years ago... great stuff...
<DocTechnical> hnn: yeah, you got it
<HasNoName> The day I saw that I also saw "Gimme Shelter" and met Albert
Maysles, and saw a 3D porno film with John Holmes in an art musuem
<DocTechnical> i figured you had, it won an audience award at a film
festival and must have been seen in a limited art house release
<HasNoName> amazing the things you remember...
<DocTechnical> first time lili and i caught it (quite by chance) on ifc,
we were hooked - brilliant work
<HasNoName> and there was a Stan Brakhage documentary in the middle of
all that, I think...
<DocTechnical> hnn: shelter, maysles, 3d holmes - quite a day for the
young has no name!
<uhmeow> quite a day for an Old has no name
<DocTechnical> egads, brakhage - i have one of his books, a little tome
the title of which i think was "a moving picture giving and taking book"
... ?
<uhmeow> growing older: What an Option!
<DocTechnical> as opposed to .. ?
<HasNoName> I'd like to see more Brakhage stuff. it doesn't play often
around here, and video isn't the best option...
<uhmeow> the bitsite
<uhmeow> we went to the border on tuesday and the tile we put there with
bit's photo and url on it had bleached completely out.
<uhmeow> a blank tile
<uhmeow> that's the option, doc. all.
<uhmeow> a tabula rosa.
<uhmeow> as if you had never even been at all.
<DocTechnical> yeah i know - it was a rhetorical question.
<DocTechnical> sorry to hear about the bleachout
<uhmeow> steph is investigating medium that would not do that.
<DocTechnical> i imagine it's hard to put something like that up that
can withstand the sun and rain over time
<uhmeow> tile may not be the correct medium
<Rotonoto> suggest some sort of etching technique, cat
<DocTechnical> at least the web site is not bleached out
<uhmeow> the photo on the plaque and the border (you may recall seeing)
has a photo that is time-resistant.
<Rotonoto> etch and then tint for contrast
<uhmeow> sun, rain, whatever, it stays the same
<uhmeow> yes indeed, roto.
<uhmeow> we'll be in italy soon and they've been engraving their
monuments to withstand the millennia. i can learn someting there, per chance
<Rotonoto> texhnique used for years on radios and other electronics-
'grouting', where a white strip is applied in an etched index line
<Rotonoto> on a control knob
<DocTechnical> ok, sorry, confused plauqe with tile
<Rotonoto> some variant of thet
<Rotonoto> that
<uhmeow> no, not the plaq, doc. the plaq is fine, the tile i made this
january had gone to badly bleached by may to non-existant now
<uhmeow> a tabula rosa
<Rotonoto> use some sort of photo-etching technique, as is done with
printed circuit boards
<Rotonoto> then acid-ecth to produce 3D relief
<Rotonoto> etch
<uhmeow> plaq is raised letters of steph's poem and the photo in some
medium that is somehow protected against the elements. must find out
what it is and duplicate for others
<uhmeow> sounds right, roto
<DocTechnical> i could sure use some 3d relief about now - think i'll
turn in
<DocTechnical> or at the very least get some sleep
<Rotonoto> single hued 'half tone'? (one color photo that can be etched)
<uhmeow> ok, good night, doc
<DocTechnical> lili says "howz it goin', eh?"
<uhmeow> i'll email you later this week
<Rotonoto> for comic relief, accept only the firesign theatre
<uhmeow> in did
<DocTechnical> y'all have a good one, catch ya on the flip side
<Rotonoto> say "howza!" back!
<DocTechnical> exit - stage left - snoring all the way -
