Hello all. I'm new to this newsgroup and I'm wondering if there are any
fans out there
of the excellent uk series "Press Gang" which stars Julia Sawalha (of
Absolutley Fabulous ) and Dexter Fletcher .It ran for 5 years from 1989 to 1993
and was written by an outstanding writer of comedy-drama , Steven Moffat .
I saw an article relating to Steven Moffat's BBC show "Joking Apart" in
the Britcomedy Digest so I guess there must be a few of you out there who know
of whom I'm talking.
"Press Gang" was shown in a children's TV slot On ITV but was deserving of
an early evening slot due to the age of the charcaters (late teens, when it
started) and the stunning scripts which contained much subtlety and wit which
frankly must have completely bypassed any young kids watching.
The basic premise was that of a group of young adults working and writing
for their own youth newspaper. The charcters were a joy to watch as they were
performed by very fine actors delivering top-notch dialogue which contained
material far funnier than that which is/was found in coventional u.k. sitcoms.

I'd like to hear from anyone out there who is interested in either
"Press Gang" or Steven Moffat.

If you prefer, feel free to e-mail me - jo...@deehan.demon.co.uk

Yes, there are -- not me unfortunately, somehow I managed to miss the
series completely, but there seem to be a lot of fans out there.

I imagine Steven Moffat knows who he is -- he's been known to read and post
news, although I think more frequently in rec.arts.tv.uk than here.

Anyway, as you mentioned BD I'll just plug it a bit more: Issue 4 contained
an article on "Press Gang". Plug plug, backissues on cathouse:

Thanks for your reply James. Do you write for the Britcomedy Digest!
I'd just been reading the great Press Gang article by an Austrailian
contributer in Issue 4 before I loaded up the newsgroups but thanks anyway.
It's a shame you never saw "Press Gang", hopefully Channel 4 will
repeat them all in the future- this was seriously on the cards at one point
I gather.
Any Press Gang fans out there may be interested to know that there
is a fanzine called "Breakfast at Czars" devoted to all things concerning
the show, plus all things relating to Steven Moffat. There are at least
3 issues currently available plus a collection of fan fiction. For what it's
worth, I highly recommend it.
Please e-mail me and I'll send you
the postal address for this
essential fanzine - and no, I have no vested interest in it , other than
wanting it to reach as many "Press Gang" fans as possible!

Wishing all newsgroup readers around the globe a Happy New Year!

Can I just crash this Press Gang thread to shamelessly plug (yet
again) my other series, Joking Apart, which starts its second
series on Jan 3, BBC2, 9:00. Go on, watch it! Please! It's got
nudity!

Does anyone out there have any NTSC-format videos of this show? Please
e-mail me if you do. I'd really like to see what it's like.
