I've been reading this newsgroup for a little while and wonder why people do
bother to argue with Barry. Obviously there are gays and people who don't like
gays in all fraternities. Anyone who doesn't agree is a fool.
Acknowledge this, and perhaps Barry will consider it evidence for why the greek
system should be shut down. Show Barry that you're trying to improve or have a
situation which doesn't fit his notions, and he'll point his finger at you and
declare, "I have suffered at the hands of homophobia; you weren't there for me;
why should I believe you or give you credit? Your posts and your best efforts
are futile because they do not assauge my pain." (not an actual quote... but
Barry, please correct me if I've misrepresented you)
I acknowledge that Barry's posts that he did not get an invitation to join the
greek system because he is gay, and that is clearly homophobia. I think that
most of the nation is homophobic (though most people would tolerate it, so long
as it doesn't "affect" their lives). And so most greeks are probably
homophobic too. I also don't think attitudes will change overnight, despite
anyone's best efforts.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about homophobia in the greek system. But
the heart of people's frustration with Barry, I think, is that he comes off as
a narrow minded individual who is ready to target anyone on here based on one
piece of information -- that they are greek.
By not ever giving us a chance, and by taking on a hostile attitude from the
start, he weakens any possibility that we on this newsgroup can get to know him
as a person, a likeable individual, and someone we can connect to and exchange
knowledge with. Instead, we only know him as Barry the unfriendly and the
unapproachable.

i am not as narrow-minded as erin, who states that i am as annoying as kyle
because i have the gaul to get up on my soapbox and state the truth. i think
the reason why kids are dying in these greek houses, date rapes are going
on, and gays are being denied opportunities, is because people shut up.
this is why we have republicans going after clinton, and noone says anything
about it.

My sorority Sigma Kappa donates money to gerontology to research Alzheimers and
aging. This is something that I am so proud of and one of the reasons i joined
this sorority since my grandfather died of this. To put down the greek system
because of a few bad apples is absolutely ludicrous. You sit by your computer
and whine about all your woes and tell everyone that WE should do something.
However, I am not the one with the problem here Barry, its you. If you feel
that the greek system is homophobic, and discriminates against gays as you so
openly whine about, then start an awareness group and ask to talk at meetings.
DO SOMETHING about it YOURSELF instead of whining in a newsgroup. The only
way you'll get anything done is by doing it yourself. Its a way of life.
You'd think that you would have learned that with your overpriced education.

it is wonderful that your sorority helps some elderly people occasionally.
but, i am talking about some real issues here.
if there were no negative aspects of the greek system to speak of, then i
would not be speaking about it. and neither would newsweek, advocate, xy
magazine, the chicago tribune, the new york times, rolling stone, etc. but
what does the media know....to the unread, they are all a bunch of liars who
are run by pro-homosexual anti-christs (read:jews). (pat robertson, 700 club

actually, i tried. i tried to start a gay fraternity at northwestern. even
though all four members of the northwestern gay group was inherantly against
it, i got some supportive statements from orthodox jews on campus. however,
the strongest opposition made came from the office of greek affairs (res
life) at northwestern.
the fraternity male advisor (name withheld) at northwestern, stated that
northwestern "was not in a position to allow any 'cultural fraternities (black,
asian, jewish, gay, etc.) to colonize at northwestern at this time. in fact,
when i tried to explain to him why a gay fraternity was important, he
accused me of using "my background" in order to get somewhere. furthermore,
he stated that he was not going to be "politically correct" in his dealings
with me. it seems that he features traditional fraternal views that
homosexuals and minorities might have a place in society, but not in the
collegiate greek system, unless they sequester themselves in the
assimilation prescribed by his rules.
now, that this person is the advisor for the black-greek letters at
northwestern, i wonder how his prejudice is reconciled.

as usual, when Barry knows that he is backed into a corner, his only argument
is how your education is inferior to his...

this is true with any organization... all of the above magazines talk about
problems with the United States of America... so what's your point? and why
do you always try to bring in this political/religious bs in here?

so based on one person who would not allow you to start a fraternity, you
condemn the whole system as being racist and homophobic? I don't get how nwu
admitted you into their school... but then again, seeing how ignorant the
fraternity advisor was, I think that it explains itself...

Ouch that hurt Barry. Yeah, well at least with my education, I've learned how
to type with some capital letters and spell. I am quite proud of the education
I am getting. At least I'm not using my university name as some way to impress
people on the net. Its not working Barry. One thing is for sure though. I
have learned how to read ALL aspects and agree that some points you make are
true. However, you seem to feel that you are superior to others and only your
points are correct. Here is a fact Barry, there IS a negative side to the
greek system, ie, your points, rape, excess drinking, homophobia etc etc, in
SOME CHAPTERS, but guess what, that is how SOCIETY is. The greek system is
hardly a significant part of a life. Sure, you hear more about the bad
things.... but Chapters do many good things you dont hear about. So, why don't
YOU open up a little bit and listen as people tell the good things their
chapters are doing.
Erin
BTW: I really don't know why i posted this response, because i know ignorant
Barry isn't even going to pay attention to any positive things I said in my
response. He bases his feelings on the greek system on negative things he
reads in the newspaper. I guess he feels that society as a whole are a bunch
of bigots and whatever else he calls the greeks, since society has rapists,
drunks, homophobes and all the other negative slanders that Barry calls us!!
