As an alum of the great 1994 J! Teen Tournament (I finished 2nd) who now plays CB at Wash. U., I can
report of at least 2 others on the CB circuit. I still keep in touch with Paul Loeffler (he finished 3rd)
who plays CB at Syracuse and from seeing his name on this newsgroup I know Matt Morris (he won) plays at
Princeton.

Well, back in the old days (1993) I got to the second
round of the teen Tournament. Are there any other alums of
that year on the circuit (I think Lev Osherovic -sp? - plays at
Cal and Brent Keeling at Vanderbilt. Incidentally, Mit
Robertson, one of that year's finalists, also goes to UVA,
although I was never able to twist his arm into coming out for
CB)>
Other UVA personell:
Former coach Tom Michael (don't remember how he did, but I
think there was some question about Great Lakes he
didn't like to discuss.
Former player John Harris appeared on one episode last fall.
Former player Jamie Weiss, teen champion (1991, I think).
Current co-chair Melissa Murray, 1992 teen tournament.

I think I'm leaving someone out who was here before I was...

Mr. Beall, would you care to comment on the ethics of appearing on Jeopardy!
despite your vocation as a quiz show host and Jeopardy!'s rules barring such
players? If we see a brazen proclamation that you flout Jeopardy!'s rules
of conduct posted to a public forum, how can we be sure that you won't do
the same to your own rules while administering an academic competition? Not
that I think much of your questions (judging by the samples on your web
site and the opinions of those unfortunate enough to play on Questions
Unlimited tripe in high school) to begin with.

And the winningest of all, Jim Scott, $149,300.

Starting in 1990, we averaged a player per year on (regular) Jeopardy!

David Larson, who played from 1990-1993 at Wisconsin was on the
1993 college tournament. He returned to Madison from taping on
a Thursday, and the regionals were the next day. He was worn out by
the end of the weekend. He was a semi-finalist, if I remember correctly.

Also Bruce from UMinnesota made the tournament of champions and took
second I think, but could be mistaken in 1992.

Oh, in addition, former Berkeley players Jeff Thompsen and Lev Osherovich
were both on J! previous to their CB careers; Jeff was a semi-finalist on
the College tournament in '93, and Lev was in the High School tournament
the same year, I think.

When is the air date for the Jeopardy! College Tournament this year?
I know they changed it around from when they've been showing it previously,
but I haven't heard of what they changed it to, and I would be interested

In addition to Felicia, Chuck and Vandana (along with Jeff Johnson and myself,
the lineup for one Harvard team (name to be announced) at Penn Bowl), some
former Harvard players have appeared on J! 93-94 captain Graydon Hazenberg
won one game for $17K and 91-92 and 92-93 varsity player Ali Vaezy won two
games for $27K, both televised in 1994. 1993 College Tournament runner-up
Eric Biber attended a couple practices but never played for Harvard in a
tournament. Ex-players (but still Harvardians) Kiran Kedlaya and Patricia
Larash also played in the Teen Tournament, although I'm not positive about
Kiran.

As for the rest of us, I certainly plan to try out for J! if and when there's
a tryout close by or I'm in LA. It seems to me as if the regular show would
have a higher "expected value" per appearance for a College Bowl player, who
presumably would have deeper "academic knowledge" that the regular show
questions would reward more than the tournaments, plus you can win more money
for winning one game. Anyone else have a theory on this?

Harvard has three current players that have appeared on J!. Felicia Wu
was a semifinalist in the 1994 Teen Tourney, and I was one in the 1995
version. And our very own Vandana Madhavan participated in this year's
College Tourney. You'll have to tune in to see how far she went, though.
She's not telling. I only know of one other person from the '95 TT that
has also played; Jim Steichen of UVA played at Maryland, but he says he
has since left the team (to UVA's dismay, I'm sure.) I'd like to see
where the '95 TT champ, Matt Zielinsky (now a senior in HS) goes. This
time last year he was set on Case Western. Then again, I was planning on
being a Yalie...

I just taped regular Jeopardy! about 10 days ago. My first show airs
Friday 19 April. (No, I will not tell you how I did, unless I've already
told you. But if you know any good agents, please let me know. I think
this Hollywood stuff could go somewhere :)

Advice: try to get on the regular show. It's much easier to get on, and
though you have to float your own expenses there is the potential to win
much more than you could on the tournaments.

I am still peeved about the false advertising for the "Teen" Tourney. D^2
called it the "High School" Tourney which is more correct...

Sendhil

PS: The Teen Tourney was taped the week before my games. I believe it and
the College Tourney will air in February (part of the reason my show has
such a long lag from tape to air).

(stuff about high-school quiz bowl moderators playing J! deleted)

Well, Mr. Beale nonwithstanding, does this mean that those of us
who moderate high school quiz bowl matches regularly are considered
"game show hosts" and are therefore ineligible?

Also, how does J! justify banning game show hosts, but not College Bowl
players or coaches? It seems to me that there is some serious unfairness
on the part of J! here, too. (I mean, come on. They don't have to
choose Wink Martindale as a contestant.)

From the New York Daily News, 11/1/95, by A.J. Benza and Michael Lewittes:

If you owe some major money, and you're thinking of hightailing
it out of town anyway, may we suggest L.A. That's where "Debt," a
new game-show pilot will be shot next week. The show's basic
premise is finding young people in debt from brilliant ideas like
road-tripping to Vegas who are willing to answer inane pop culture
questions in an attempt to pay off their bills.

The game show, to be hosted by our favorite, Wink Martindale,
will feature three young contestants on the verge of hocking
everything, who must fess up to how they got so far in debt before
being allowed to win any loot. And yes, sources connected to the
show actually are saying, "This will do for Wink Martindale what
MTV did for Tony Bennett. Wink's an incredibly cool guy."

Regarding the reported unethical behavior of Mr. Beale,

I think I sped on the way to the airport to catch the plane to go
to Los Angeles on my Jeopardy! journey. I would like to apologize to the
State of Missouri Highway Patrol for my brazen flouting of State Law and
unethical behavior, and I would like to appeal to the Governor for a pardon.

I think I read a newspaper article about Chip Beale being
involved in Whitewater. Or maybe it was a post. Is he the Unabomber? Is
he a Communist? Is he a witch? Perhaps we should set up a newsgroup
just for flaming Chip Beale, and for answering these pressing questions
about that personification of pure evil known as Chip Beale.

Perhaps that wasn't a rule back in 1985.

Hey, this is a great idea! God knows that it seems that we would have enough
to talk about, and more than enough people to participate. Thanks, Mark. You
really have given us something to think about.

First topic on alt.chip.beale.why?.why?.why? shall be trying to figure

As long as this thread is still going on, I might as well mention the
rice college-bowl types who have ended up on jeopardy!... Todd Konkel (of
the current team) played (semifinalist) in the '95 College Tournament. Eric
Moore(?) was
on shortly after he graduated and ended up being a 4 or 5 time champion
with over $65000 to his credit... i forget how he did in the tournament
of champions... Raymond Eich, from the Rice '91 College Bowl National
Championship Team (as was Eric) was on the regular show this past
halloween. And I, in spite of being from an AC wasteland, was on the teen
tournament way way back in 1992 (semi-finalist choke choke)... there was
also a more female person from rice about 5 or 6 years ago, but i don't
the she played rice college bowl past intramurals, but, as usual, i might
be wrong...
