The UVa club's Web page says that part of the reason for their
deaffiliation from CBI is monetary difficulty. This is the reason why
NYU has deaffiliated too; I wonder how many other teams are moving away
from CBI because of tight budgets?
(If someone wants to start a rant thread to see whose club is
dealing with the worst student activities office, I think we've got you
all beat. We used to get our travel money from the athletics office,
but now have to get it from the regular activities funding committee,
ASSABC (pronounced "ass-back"). Not only do we now have half the travel
money this year we had last year, ASSABC has decided our other expenses
can be covered with $500 this semester and $450 next. This includes
packets, food for meetings, advertising to bring in new members, etc.
Also, our wonderful, talented advisor moved to Maine over the summer,
Student Activities wouldn't let a team member who works for the univer-
sity be our new advisor, we were assigned first one and then another
advisor who is the advisor for several clubs and none of us have ever
met. Our current advisor has only spoken to the president of the club and
is unlikely to make it to a meeting any time in the foreseeable future.
If anyone out there has experience with a situation like this, we could
use some help!)

I'm not sure what the web page says, but UVa has not actually, as of this
date, deaffiliated from CBI. (We still haven't heard how much money we'll
be getting this year.)

???

When did all this happen?

Talk to Oklahoma. I believe that they have held the undisputed title in
this category for quite some time.

Ooh, them's fightin words. Of course, I'm not going to say anything
yet I'm on my best behavior (yeah, right) because we might finally
(after over 4 1/2 years of struggling, pleading, negotiating, and
whining) be about to win control of our own destiny.

>If anyone out there has experience with a situation like this, we could

My suggestion (or at least what we think finally did it for us): Go to
Nationals (or any really long trip), make sure at least one person
from Student Activities Office invites themself along, catch them
mis-allocating University funds, and threaten to turn them in (or in
our case, actually do it.) You'd be surprised what kind of
negotiating position you'll get. :) (I knew there was a reason Fate
or God or insert-higher-power-of-choice-here brought that *$#!*%# Hale
to CBI Nationals and compelled him to spend the whole time off
golfing. I just never realized what it was.)

As for other thoughts on your situation:
1) If you can, recruit your own faculty sponsor. JoAnna (our sponsor)
doesn't know the faintest thing about quiz bowl and doesn't
particularly care to learn, but she knows the OU bureaucracy, who to
contact, etc. and has really given us a hand with the paperwork. Even
someone who doesn't know squat about anything but is willing to make
an effort is better than a "stealth sponsor."
2) If you're stuck with the sponsor from hell, you will need someone
else to handle the bulk of the junk, because waiting for the sponsor
to do a da*n thing is about as productive as waiting for Godot. OKACT
finally appointed a team manager this year to handle all of the
tournament paperwork and everything else we don't send to JoAnna.
3) As for funding, OU gave us approximately $250 for last year
(although that's misleading because CAC buys the College Bowl campus
questions) and we have no reason to expect any more this year. Our
tournaments pull in some but I, too, would like some more suggestions
is this department.

Oklahoma is not deaffiliating from CBI in the near future because the
IM tournament coordinators refuse to give up CBI (even though the may
finally cede selection rights for the Regionals team to OKACT) and I
see no reason not to send an OKACT team to CBI Regionals if OU's
already spent a quarter of the national debt on IM questions from CBI
so that we could do so. Personally, I'd rather take that money they
spent on the campus packets and spend it on some more tournaments, but
I promised to stay out of the IM tournament committee's hair if
they'll stay out of mine and I intend to keep my end of the bargain up
and until they blow their part.

Just to clarify, UVA has NOT deaffiliated in any official
sense. We simply are not guaranteed of funding from any source
this year (besides our own tourneys and maybe a bake sale or
two) so we can't say that we are affiliated until we know that
we have money. However, as far as I know we plan to play CBI
when/if we get the money...

Um, cry me a river. :P

Despite the fact that this is the richest school in the U.S., they
won't spare a dime for our club. Last year we managed to get a $300 grant
from our Undergraduate Council, but because of Catch-22 regulations in
applying the money (don't even ask...) the grant expired.
