With Mac being one of the most frequently updated OS, there have been several updates since OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 and they are Mac OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Yosemite, OS X El Capitan, OS X Mojave, OS X Sierra, OS X High Sierra, and OS X Catalina. So, if you are planning to upgrade your Mac OS, make sure you choose the best OS to stay updated and use the best features. You can Install a suitable Mac OS on your system but before doing so, check with the minimum system requirements to run the specific OS.
If the old version of the OS you are after predates Snow Leopard and you have a developer account you might be able to get it from developer.apple.com/downloads. If you search within the OS X category you should see downloads for all versions of OS X, at least from version 10.3 to 10.6.

I was recently prompted to d/l the most recent V. of firefox for my old macbook running 10.6.8 and AFTER REPLACING the older V. I'm told the new V. won't run. I've tried getting El Capitan from Apple but the d/l won't even start. Please help me!

OK. Snow Leopard doesn't have c++11 support. Soulseekqt now uses QT5 which needs c++11. You can build qt5 using Homebrew but you would also need the Soulseekqt source code to investigate if it could be patched for 10.6 support.
