Hey Everyone :)

Outside of my work, I love to write with fountain pens, but at work (in a
hospital), ballpoint pens are just more convenient because we have to make so
many carbon copies, write out prescriptions, etc. Does anyone out there have
opinions about the ballpoint pen with the absolute darkest, smoothest ink
flow?? I want to know about the cheapest office supply pens up to the expensive
ones. I've owned both and I'm still trying to find the one that I call my
favorite.

Thanks
CBN

The smoothest ballpoint pens I have used are Waterman ball points. At
the low end is the Phileas (about $22), very smooth. You can also opt
for an Expert II (about $80), or a Preface (also about $80). All are
very smooth and dark.

I have a Waterman Hemisphere for those times when I have to use a
ballpoint (about $30) and it is easily the smoothest pen I have ever
used. They make rollerball version of each if you prefer. Go to the
nearest McWhorter's or other decent office supply store and give them
a try (Staples and Office Depot also carry Waterman).

At the very low end, the Parker jotter (about $5 in a blister pack) is
the best of the throwaways...

I'd suggest a black Pilot Explorer (single use (not sterile, though!)).

I'm not really sure about darkest ink, but the smoothest ballpen
refills, I think, are the Parker Jotter and the Cross. My preference is for
larger pens, so I use the Parker Frontier and the Cross black anodized
Century 2000. Of the two, I have to admit I carry the Cross more often.
A good rollerball is probably darker than a ballpoint, but for writing
on office forms, I'd stick with the ballpoint.

I much prefer Caran d'Ache (medium) ballpoints. They are the smoothest and
most consistent I have come across. I purchased a couple for about $14
Australian each - that's about $9 US. These were the same shape as their
Harlequin ballpoint, but were painted alloy with a slip-on clip. Lamy
mediums aren't bad, either. One of their Safari range would be nice -
distinctive, too.

Ciao,

My personal favorite throwaway (although it is refillable) is any PaperMate
pen that comes with a "LubriGlide" refill. Depending on the style they
retail for $5-10 at any Office Max, Staples, etc. They write very smooth
from the beginning and lay down a very dark line. Too bad Papermate does not
make these refills for Parker/Pelikan BP's.

Parker's Golden Touch refill is exceptionally smooth and dark. Fisher
refills are also excellent and in the Sensa ballpoint, make for an excellent
ball point pen.

Also try the Pilot G-2. it is a refillable gel roller ball that writes
extremely smoothly, almost like a rollerball, but no cap.

I am using a Rotring Quattro Data pen these days for my ball point. Does
anyone know who makes the best refill for these? they are the skinny short
refills found in most multi pens...

The darkest smoothest writing pens are filled with Fox's U-Bet.

Yeah, I tend to like roolers 2nd to FP's, my favorite being the Sanford
Uni-Ball vision. As for ballpoints, I agree, the Paper Mate is my favorite.

My preference is for Lamy's. Went through my entire military career (with more
triple copies of everything than you can think of) with a Black Safari. Their
M16 refills usually last between 6-9 months, and is very smooth and durable
I've found that the Broad is smoother than the Medium. You can go as low as $9
for a Logo or as high as $350 for a Persona. My favorite is their new Accent
with the Rubber grip.

What is "Fox's U-Bet"? What pens are filled with it?

Fox's U-Bet is the brand name for a line of flavored syrups; I
believe the company was begun in the nineteenth century. The chocolate
syrup is especially famous in New York for its use in egg creams (a
drink that has neither eggs nor cream in it!)--many conoisseurs swear a
New York egg cream isn't an egg cream unless it has Fox's U-Bet in it.
Wouldn't recommend it for pens, however, though it's a lovely shade of
brown.
Ah, the understated humor of a pen-lover!--how could you not love
it?

Jimney gel med, the smoothest and the darkest! About a buck each.
