$10 for a stop payment? I had to do one last month for a
bill that got lost and hadn't shown up at the company in
nearly 6 weeks. First one I'd done in at least 10 years.
Mine cost me $20 bucks! (BankBoston)

A major convenience for us re: it is that it has a branch
INSIDE the grocery store, not just a machine! So he can
cash a check if the machine's down, etc. on the spot.
I've kept my BayBank account mainly for the huge number of
branches in the network re: teller machines.

I do 99% of my banking on the phone now. Having direct
deposit means never really having to go "to the bank"
unless you want to pick up some cash out of the machine, so
I use the phone a lot to move money and check which checks
have cleared, etc.
Have debit cards become "the norm" with Fleet? When the
banks merged they "replaced" all the old teller cards with
"teller/debit" cards and I raised cain on that. I called
them right up and said send me a REGULAR card -- I DO NOT
want a debit card. And they complied.
A lot of people may love the debit cards, but I'm not one
of them. When they first came out they charged you like
.75 per use, and I'd be darned if I used them that way
(that was on top of the monthly fee, BTW).

Checks are sold in lots of 200, either 25 or 40 count per
booklet. (The 40s are relatively new -- have only seen
that one one order I've made so far.) Some companies do
25s, others 40s.

We get free check registers to write down transactions etc, but the
actual checks get quite expensive. Even the blah, icky, plain ones are
close to $20 for 500.

I NEVER buy checks from the back - from an independent check printer I can
get about three boxes for the price of one of the NON-designer boxes I get
from the bank. It's well worth making the switch.
