Interior House Painting

Hi everyone.


This question as been probably asked before.

I have oil based paint in my house on my ceiling. I want to repaint it
with water based ceiling paint.

Can I just put a water based primer and then paint it with regular water
based ceiling paint? Please respond to this group.

Hello Kal,


there is one golden rule in painting surfaces: if the current coat is based
on water, the only type of paint you can put on top of it, is water based
paint, e.g. acrylic paint, vinyl, latex.
So in this case, it is alright to put water based paint over the oil based
paint. Be sure to clean the ceiling so all the dirt and grease get off
before you start painting!

Actually, there are latex paints designed specifically for this
situation.Ask your paint store.Oil primer will work but it sounds like you
are trying to avoid using oil,

If the original oil is in good condition, has no cigarette smoke deposits,
etc. on it and is a flat, you can paint right over it with the water based
stuff. If there are any seep throughs from a bad roofing job or a plumbing
leak, smoke deposits, or it's a funky color - go ahead and use a pigmented
shellac primer and then a good latex or oil finish coat over that.

It might help if you tell us what the ceiling is composed of - shot ceilings
can be a real PITA.

Contrary to popular belief, you can paint the newer oil based paints over
water based paints as long as the water based paints are well cured. The
newer oil paints have less VOC's and have much less of a solvent effect on
the previous coat. Note that I'm a painter in California, so some of the
products that you might use I might not be familiar with - so use my advice
only after you've done more research with the particular products that are
available in your area.
