I've been on the Usenet since 1994, when a "busy" posting day, consisted
of about 6 posts. It was in mid-1995 that I first heard about SPAM and
about how it was going to ruin the Usenet. Which it has. It was the golden
days. The days when people communicated, and the 14 year old didn't
dominate with their hysterical screeching and self-importance. It was nice.
But, gone forever now....

hmmmm.... im trying to think of a usenet without spam... or trolls... or
self centered 14 year olds... or fanboys... or more than 6 posts a day...

damn, it must have been boring as hell back then!!

sorry, im sure there was some very cool people back then, but cool
people still exist on usenet - and it is they who make it all worth it,
no matter how much spam or trolling or crap that fills usenet, it is
still the best place on the internet filled with some of the coolest
people around...

i have no complaints...

Aaahhhh Yes.... I remember it like it was yesterday. Stroking the keys
in that awkward, not quite knowing what to do, manner. Hoping the
Computer was getting sufficiently warmed up. Adjusting my technique to
the clicks and whines of the harddrive being accessed. Slowly moving
the mouse, carressing it in my hands. Clicking on an N64 newsgroup and
feeling a sudden burst of excitement and adrenaline as other peoples
thoughts and opinions came flooding to my eye's. It mattered not if
these things were useless.

Soon I was branching out to other newsgroups. I felt dirty. Like a
whore who couldn't get what he needed from just one newsgroup. I'm not
proud of it.. I've often thought about trying to go cold turkey and
stopping the madness. But sitting around the house, i hear the soft
whispers of usenet calling me....

And I remember the way the computer felt in my hands. Over the years
I've learned the ways of turning on my computer, it's become second
nature by now. Almost with little emotion. I find myself always trying
to relive that fateful day. When the act seemed brand new and emotions
were overflowing. But you can never recapture that feeling you get
from the first time. Though I try......... Though I try........

Yes, I remember.

It was an Calgary Flames NG (NHL) and I commented on what a totally useless
fucking jerk the Flames' coach Brian Sutter was at the time.

LOL!!! absolutely brilliant :)

personally i needed some way of passing the time while trapped at work,
when i started my job here i was the first and only web designer this
company employed - but i had NEVER BEEN ON THE INTERNET BEFORE!! i had
totally bullshitted my way into the job, however it wasn't long before i
had sussed out html and was quickly bored...

i found myself jumping from site to site, forever searching for the
ultimate in foolish communication, and i found ICQ... however it wasn't
long before my companies firewall blocked off my growing list of ICQ
contacts and i was forced to get my kicks elsewhere...

which is when i checked out that news bit in netscape, the bit i had
been avoiding until now with its serious and boring sounding name... i
don't want news! i want foolish communication!! and lo and behold,
foolish communication was there, hidden away inside...

my first group was alt.cloned-sheep.bah.bah.bah, a group with 5 people
continually posting off topic crap... then we had a few encounters with
the adjective army, so we took control of the free.adjective-army group...

but despite all this off topic bizarreness i demanded something more!!!

and this lead me to one of my biggest loves at the time, the zelda64
group - which then lead me onto the N64 group for much fun arguing over
whether zelda was an RPG or not, but by the time i had arrived there
perfect dark had been released and the N64 was dying a slow quiet death...

and that brought me here just over 2 years ago!!

(recently i rediscovered the cloned-sheep newsgroup which i had
originated from, which is (a) the inspiration of this thread and (b) why
its cross posted over there...)

hmnmmmmm.

it was so long ago.

I think the first froups I was onto were pr0n, as this was the purpose
of USEnet, so I had heard: good quality, free, deviant pr0n.

that got old quick.

I've been a chatter in my past days, I'm ashamed to admit, and when pr0n
got old, I started looking for something else to do on USEnet. I had a
Nintendo 64, so I started reading it for info...mostly game codes at the
time.

that's when the chuds came at me...

I was still using AOL back then when I first discovered USENET in Sept.
'97 I've lurked most with an occasional private email to the post
author. The first NG I've subscribed (and still in) is
comp.sys.mac.misc

I found Nintendo (rec.games.video.nintendo) shortly thereafter. Right
now I subscribe to over 30 NGs with active partipication in some.

Through all the old email accounts I've had a quick check of Google
group shows I've made close to 10,000 posts in the past 5 years.

Back in '99 on alt.toys.transformers

My first posts were horribly embarassing, I made a complete ass of myself, and
had to work to be considered a decent human being... But it's all good, word.

And before you go checking, my REALLY bad posts were not made from this account.
So nyah ;)

But Usenet's been around since the mid eighties. One of the early posts involves
how 'Star Wars: The Revenge of the Jedi' is going to kick ass ;)

Mine isn't that interesting. I take January off of work so after 9 years of
being on the internet I ventured onto Usenet out of boredom. Only to find
out it was
exactly what I thought it was. Nothing but a bunch of teenagers arguing.
And I'm still here adding to it. :)

DavidG17's first time is more interesting.

The Green Goblin is a sad idiot. He come up with the dumbest names for
people (omo, bilgemerk) make no sense most of the time (PS2rollup?) and is
the worst at flaming. He has no sense of humor what so ever. The only reason
I found out his secret passion was because he was the only person
complaining about my Bligmerkbot. I thought it was the real Bligmerk so I
searched the email address. All those posts in alt.sex.incest.stories were
the first ones to pop up.

Basically we'd talk about anything related to Lebanon, which included
politics, culture and the social problems that plague Lebanon as a
result of the war. There was quite a lot of bigotry in that newsgroup
(which is a reflection of how things were in Lebanon and the cause of
the war): Christians insulting Muslims and Vice-versa, but things
improved over time as people learned about one another. Can't say the
same for Lebanon as a whole though, which is still very much divided.
