Please don't moan if you've already known this but I've got somethin'
I wanna point out.

I've jsu seen two of the coolest movies ever, Clerks and Mallrats.
Haven't seen chasing Amy yet, but it looks like the best of the three,
buy I'm curious about these aspects.-

So Randal is Brodies cousin, judging by the fact that they have the
same perverted Cousin Walter. Why don't they appear in a movie
together, their both my favourite characters from both of these films
(excluding Jay & Silent Bob). Also, what happened to the actor who
played Randal, he was cool. I know Jason lee (Brodie) went on to star
in Chasing Amy, but what happened to Randal?

The actor who played Dante made a brief appearance in the movie as
the third suitor on the game show. Why didn't he play Dante, is it
some rule by Kevin Smith?

They both mentioned that girl (forgot her name) who died in the
swimming pool. In Clerks they visited her wake, and in Mallrats she
was mentioned as T.S was the cause for her death.

Rick Whatsisface (guess what I've forgotten his name) he was seen in
Clerks mentioning to Dante how he screwed Caitlain behind his back.
And in Mallrats he was mentioned when T.S and Brodie were talking to
the rather gorgeous Gwen about when SHE screwed him.

Oh and when T.S and Brodie are hiding in the Flea Market, and when
Brodie is looking through the comics on one stall, I saw T.S try on a
cap, not just any cap, a Clerks cap. I want one. And when he saw what
it was he frowned and threw it back on the table.

Are there any links like that in Chasing Amy, and is anyone else from
Clerks and Mallrats (excluding Jason Lee, Ben Affleck and Jay and
Silent Bob (can't be arsed to write their names, its easier to refer
to them as their character names)) Hmm, thats enough bracketed off
sentences for now. So long and SNOOTCHIE BOOTCHIES!

He played Dante's cousin Gil. He didn't play Dante because within the
Askew timeline Dante would be too busy caring for Caitlin at the loony-bin
to take part in a cheesy gameshow. Besides, Dante HAS a girlfriend
(Veronica), why would he need to be a contestant on the Dating Game?

Good point. The Askew timeline is actually pretty interesting - where
does Chasing Amy fit in (I've only seen it once, in cinemas, as it has
not yet been released on video here in the UK)...

If not brothers, then some kind of relation - they both have the surname
Hicks.

I believe Kevin has said that Clerk happens on Thursday, Mallrats happens

starts when Jay & Silent Bob leave the diner after they've picked up their
royalties cheque from Holden.

It depends. "Amy" IS a good movie, but I was disappointed when I first saw
it because it had some very serious and emotional themes, whereas 'Rats and
Clerks were both straight-up comedies, and that was what I was expecting from
Amy. It is a good movie, but you have to remember it isn't as comedic and
satirical as 'Rats and Clerks.

Jason Lee is also starring in Kevin Smith's new movie "Dogma." He will be
playing the role of Azarel.

You have to bear in mind that Kevin wanted to make a New Jersey "trilogy,"
telling three different stories, and that they have a chronological order.

I believe that Jeff Anderson (Randal) will be in Smith's upcoming Dogma, too.

> The actor who played Dante made a brief appearance in the movie as

Brian O'Halloran <sp?> is the guy who played Dante. In 'Rats he played Gil
Hicks, who is probably meant to be Dante Hicks' cousin. He didn't play
Dante, however. In the scheme of the movie's chronology, Dante was probably
trying to patch things up with Veronica and comfort Caitlin; ergo, his
character was unavalible for 'Rats.

More than likely, a "Clerks" cap is avalible through Jay and Silent Bob's
Secret Stash, on the web. Check out www.viewaskew.com

Well, Joey Lauren Adams (who played Gwen in 'Rats) returns as Alyssa, the
object of Ben Affleck's affections. She is Tricia Jones' (Trish the Dish
from 'Rats) sister. There are refernces also to Brandy Svenning (T.S.'
girlfriend in 'Rats) and Rick Derris, as well as a brief mention of Julie
Dwyer, and a few references to Clerks and Caitlin's institutionlization.
That's all that I can think of off the top of my head, but I think that there
are a few more scattered references to 'Rats and Clerks. Many of these
happen pretty early-on in the movie, shortly after Affleck's character
(Holden) meets Joey Lauren Adams' character (Alyssa).

Actually, it was pointed out to me that 'Rats takes place before Clerks.
In 'Rats they say that Julie had just died. In Clerks they go to the
wake. So Dante WOULD have been available to go on the game show, if he'd
wanted to. However, Dante HAS a girlfriend, so why would he go on the
game show? I know, I know, because he wasn't satisfied by Veronica. But
Dante is SUCH a wuss I don't think he'd have the balls to stand up in
front of a studio audience.

Yeah, "Amy" kinda disappointed me too. Sure, it was a great movie, but a
little too slushy in places following the no-holds-barred styles of Clerks
and Mallrats. Joey Lauren Adams was v.good, as were Ben and Jason, but Banky
was a fairly undeveloped character who could have been a lot more. Also, Jay
& Silent Bob could have had longer roles.

Still, at least it didn't have a pat-happy ending in the way Mallrats did,
and it was still a very funny and touching (without being touchy-feely)
movie.

VA Timeline:

late Thursday, early Friday: Walt Flanagan's Dog

Late Friday: Mallrats

Saturday: Clerks

Clerks the Comic happens in an imbiguous time, between Clerks and Amy
(TheMissing: Shannon Hamilton milk carton suggests that he escaped from
prison, proving that it's after Mallrats, and it's obvious why it's before Amy)

Directly Prior to Amy: Jay and Silent Bob #1

+- Two years after Clerks: Chasing Amy
Since Holden and Banky are the same age as all the other male leads, but out of
college (They did go to college, as noted in Banky's "Jaws" scene), it's about
two years later. They could be older, but all the related characters suggest
they're not. (Cohee, Derris, Julie Dwyer, Brandi, Gwen)

You guys also forgot a few crossovers. Most people won't accept the fact that
the two Willams are indeed the same character, but Kev has said that they are.
Also, In Amy, there are two easy-to miss crossovers. Outside of the Hockey
rink, Alyssa admits to Holden about having sex with Shannon Hamilton and Gwen
Turner, the two characters Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams played in
Mallrats. Also, Dunn & Reddy Home Improvements is located in the same apartment
building as Bank Holdup Productions.

Yeah, it seemed that the main theme of the Banky character was "homophobe
sexist." But that was about it. And I was personally disappointed by Banky
mainly BECAUSE he was such a homophobe. Like Brodie and Randal, Banky was
more or less the obnoxious smart-ass, but Banky was too hatefilled to be
genuinely funny.

And yeah, Jay & SB could have had a better role. I remember hearing that
they had a great scene in "Amy" but unfortunately, that scene came much too
late into the movie. I missed "Clerks" and "'Rats" because Jay and S&B had
much more screen time and were involved in a lot of the comedy. But still,
it was a great scene.

Well, Mallrats was concieved to be a lighthearted comedy. I loved the ending
of "Amy" since it WASN'T pat-happy.

Piers Anthony has written trilogies with many more than 3 books in them.
The HitchHiker's Guide To The Galaxy Trilogy has 5 books in it.

But, IMHO, it then becomes a "series", like James Bond or the Bowery Boys.

Kevin said he was trying to recreate the feel of 80s "teen movies." In those
"teen movies," even the best (like Breakfast Club) had nice, happy, pat
endings, where some of the characters get together and apparently begin
dating (without paying attention to the difference in the social classes that
they were obsessed with at the beginning of the film), etc.. When seen in
that light, it makes more sense.

Also, about the crappy "two dimensions" theory, Scotty Mo was supposed to play
Willam up 'til the last minute, but he gave the part to Ethan Suplee. Just
because Ethan is bigger than Scott people seem to be unable to accept that
they're the same character. What about all the different actors who've played
007, or Batman? Hell, the Emperor was played by two different people in Empire
and Jedi.

Sure. A trilogy doesn't have to be three. So the word
starts with "tri" like tricycle, so what. Ever read
the Douglas Adams "Hitchhiker Trilogy"? There are
four books in the author's self-described "trilogy":

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe, and Everything
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Then don't get me started about George Lucas'es
9-episode Star Wars trilogy-of-trilogies.

well you can also look at it this way.. that mallrats didnt happen...
technically..
food for thought what if mallrats was a comic book as the beginning credits
present it to be
... thus being Banky and Holdens first comic "something more personal , like
our first book" as stated in amy... thus being based on people they know and
the myth of the eden prarie mall incident... which would explain the banky and
holden likenesses to brodie and hamilton.. also explaining the duality of
willam
and the down right hatred for rick derris... even prior to knowing alyssa's
connection..and also how only in mallrats jay and silent bob are slappsticky as

The first three are, I believe, referred to as the Jersey Trilogy. The fourth
movie takes place in Philly(?).

By the fourth, do you mean Dogma?

Dogma is set in Chicago and was shot in Pittsburgh (at least it was set in
Chicago the last time I checked. Things change.)

I don't think Banky was a homophobe at all. He just had stereotypes. But he
went to a bar with a openly gay man, he talked openly talked with Alyssa about
gay sex at a gay bar. He was willing to participate in a homosexual activity
to save his friendship.
These are not homophobic activities.. a closet homosexual maybe, but I even
doubt that. He is just blunt and frank about his attitudes and feelings.
Homophobe is a overly used term for people who just have opinions that may not
be PC.

If this holds true this would explain why Dante wasnt able for the game show.
Not because he was a wuss or because he has a girlfriend, but because he was at
work. Remember he closed the night before too.

It's great to see that at least ONE Askewer drops in here from time to time.

I try. I believe that only me and Vincent Pereira have the time to do so.
Well the time and will even... can you guys really imagine Mewes on the net?
Perhaps we'll try one day but he's not too into it right now.

But back on the subject, for the most part we like to see fans answer other
fans questions and correct misinformation. I guess it proves that the message
is getting across allright.

But if you have anything else, feel free to mail me: mi...@viewaskew.com.

Nah, Mewes sets his sights a little higher then that. Or at least that's
what I remember from the 'thon.

The actor that played Randal, the video clerk(in Clerks) supposedly had a
falling out of some sort w/Kevin Smith.

if he did, they must have worked it out because the guy who played randall has
a small part as a clerk in Dogma

Randal IS appearing in Dogma though, and future Askew films. They seem to
have made up. I heard the falling out was due to Jeff Anderson's attitude
on the set of Clerks. Like many of the actors on Clerks (Jason Mewes!)
his on-screen character is a little too close to his real-life personality.
