As the migrant crisis continues to overwhelm many cities in America,
residents are not too excited about the situation. Chicago residents
have been outspoken about the challenges the city is facing in
accommodating migrants. Some feel that the local lawmakers are ignoring
impoverished and homeless people in their own backyard.
At the moment, Chicago is struggling to provide shelter for migrants.
According to the Office of Emergency Management and Communications,
there are more than 300 migrants on warming buses and almost 15,000 in
Chicago shelters. Also, more migrants are still waiting to find shelters
at various locations, such as the Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Furthermore, Fox & Friends interviewed two Chicago residents, Cata
Truss, and Sam Sanchez, to feel the pulse of residents on the migrant
situation. Cata Truss was worried about the allocation of resources.
She was curious about the government providing warming buses to homeless
individuals in certain locations such as Canal Street, Roosevelt, and
Division Street.

Refuses to Stop Drop-Offs
Chicago has welcomed about 34,000 migrants since October 2022. So far,
the government has spent more than $156 million on housing and care.
Meanwhile, data shows that there were more than 6,000 homeless residents
in Chicago in 2023. Truss also highlighted Chicago’s projected deficit
of $391 billion for its Public Schools. According to her, the city
doesn’t have sufficient resources to continue supporting illegal
immigrants.
Truss said that the situation is caused by President Biden and the
Democratic Party’s border policies. She called on lawmakers to stop the
flow of migrants and solve the fundamental problems in countries making
people want to flee.

Additionally, Sam Sanchez pointed out that American citizens and legal
migrants seeking work visas have been sidelined because of asylum
seekers. He wondered why the government couldn’t accommodate homeless
residents in top-notch hotels with comprehensive services. Sanchez
wasn’t happy that migrants suddenly had access to resources that had
been inaccessible to communities that needed essential services.
The show hosts asked Truss if President Biden had failed Chicago
residents, and she replied that he had. She said that the administration
had no resolution to the issue. Truss also accused Democratic Governor
JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson of being part of the problem.
The residents emphasized that the lawmakers weren’t addressing the
people’s needs, even though they had voted them in. Sanchez said that
the politicians’ response to the migrant crisis would have a significant
impact on the forthcoming elections.

However, Mayor Brandon Johnson said the status quo is “non sustainable.”
He also emphasized the need for the federal government to provide
support to handle the flow of immigrants. Mayor Johnson warned that
Chicago wasn’t the only city affected by the issue.
Chicago isn’t the only city struggling to handle the flow of migrants.
New York City is also trying to cater to thousands of migrants arriving
from border cities in Texas. Gov. Abbott has continued to bus migrants
to various sanctuary cities in America.
