I've been considering buying a good, solid analytical "History of the
Popes", no alarms, hagiography or tendentiousness. I've obviously
considered Ranke, but have also noticed several new editions which have
attracted considerable debate in the pages of Amazon. Can anyone
recommend the good, or at least advise on what to avoid? I concede that
hagiography and invective have their place, of course....
I'd be interested in both Reformed and Catholic views here.
