The helicopter was involved in a water-bombing operation to extinguish a
fire burning at Tregony, in Queensland's Scenic Rim Region, on Tuesday 19
SEPTEMBER 2023.

The pilot, aged in his 40's, was trying to gather water at a dam on a
private property in nearby Tarome when his chopper hit the surface and
crashed at about 1500 HOURS.

He fortunately managed to escape the downed aircraft, which sank to the
bottom of the dam, and swam to shore.

It's understood the pilot was about two to three metres in the air when the
incident occurred.

Despite the calamitous nature of the crash, the pilot only suffered
scratches.

Emergency services and a RACQ Life Flight chopper were called to the scene.

The pilot was assessed by paramedics upon reaching the shore.

He was then airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital by the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue
chopper airlifted him to Toowoomba Hospital and remains in a stable
condition.

It's not yet known why the helicopter crashed.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service confirmed the helicopter was
helping put out the bushfire in Tregony, which had been burning for several
days.

'It's understood that the helicopter was undertaking water collection at
the time of the crash and was hovering close to the water when it hit the
surface and rolled,' a QFES statement read.

'The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and QFES will assist the
Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) with its investigation.'"
