Angels--Their Words

We have in Holy Scripture many sayings of the Holy Angels recorded for our benefit. What is it that we notice as most prominent in the words they utter?

They always seek to encourage the friends of God. "Peace be to you, fear not," are the words of St. Raphael to Tobias. "Fear not, Daniel," are the words of St. Gabriel to the Prophet. "Fear not, Mary," says the same Archangel to Our Lady. If the Angels always give such counsel, why should I fear? I will take courage, and I, too, will seek to encourage others after the manner of the Holy Angels.

They always attribute all to God, and are careful to declare that it is God who sends them on their missions to men. St. Gabriel's last word to Tobias is: "Bless ye the Lord." The song taught by the Angel to the three young men in the fiery furnace is: Benedicite. Is this spirit of gratitude and dependence the spirit that pervades my prayers?

When, too, they execute God's messages of wrath, they always do so in God's name, and not their own. Even in his contest with Satan we are told that St. Michael said: "The Lord rebuke thee." They are careful to express their dependence on God, and to refer their actions to Him as their primary Cause. If I wish to be like the Angels, I must speak as God inspires me, not according to my own desires.

15 May – Saint Euphrasius of Andujar
Also known as Euphrasius of Illiturgi
Euphemia of….
Eufrasio of….
Apostle of Spain

Memorial
15 May
13 March on some calendars
formerly 1st Sunday in June

(1st Century)

Martyr, Bishop, Missionary – according to tradition, he is one of the
group of Seven Apostolic Men (siete varones apostólicos), seven
Christian clerics ordained in Rome by Saints Peter and Paul and sent
to evangelise Spain. Besides Euphrasius, this group includes Sts
Hesychius, Ctesiphon, Torquatus, Indaletius and Secundius.

Patronages – diocese of Jaénin Spain, Andújar, Spain, Ajaccio in
France, Corsica.

In the 7th century, King Sisebut built a church over the saint’s
sepulchre at Illiturgis but during the invasion of Spain by the Moors
in the 8th century, his relics were translated to the Lugo Province.
He is buried in the church of Santa María do Mao, near the monastery
of San Xulián de Samos in Samos.

Euphrasius is also patron of Corsica and of Ajaccio – “this seems to
have been due to a secondary translation of a portion of his relics.”

A relic of a kerchief found in a chapel behind the high altar of Jaén
Cathedral is associated with a legend of St Euphrasius. When
Euphrasius was sent to Rome to free the Pope from Satan’s temptations,
it is said that he travelled to Rome in only half an hour due to the
assistance of a captive goblin who helped the saint in return for some
leftovers from the saint’s supper. Euphrasius vanquished Satan and was
awarded with a kerchief.

Euphrasius is also associated with the cult of Our Lady of Cabeza (la
Virgen de la Cabeza). According to one legend, when Saint Euphrasius
came to Spain, he brought with him an image of the Virgin Mary to
which he was devoted. According to the legend, this image was given to
Euphrasius by Saint Peter and is said to have been the portrait that
Saint Luke painted of the Virgin Mary.

Bible Quote:
For the word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness; but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God. [19] For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the prudence of the prudent I will reject. [1 Corinthians 1:18-19] DRv

Flowers of the rarest

"Bring flowers of the rarest,
Bring blossoms of the fairest,
From garden and woodland and hillside and dale,
Our full hearts are swelling.
Our glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest Flower of the Vale.

"O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.
Their lady they name thee,
Their mistress proclaim thee,
Ah! grant that thy children on earth be as true;"

56. St. Joseph of Cupertino (Monk, 1603-63) - 'Miniature Lives Of The
Saints" -- (Fr. H. Bowden, Burns & Oates, 1959 p. 422)
This Saint accepting no present but flowers, with which he adorned his
picture of the Madonna, once said:

"My Mother is hard to please: I bring her flowers and fruit, and she
does not care for them and will not accept them. I ask her what she
wants, and she answers, 'It is the heart which I care for'

NOTE:

And what then shall we give Her now, all our wills?
It's easier said than done? Then why not resolve to learn to do it?
How? By going through the "Marian Exercises" for emptying ourselves
of the 'spirit of the world', and Solemnly Consecrating ourselves
as slaves to Our Lord through Our Lady,
by St. Louis Marie de Montfort (Founder, 1673-1716)--needs four
weeks of hard work on self--worth an eternity
