" For there is one God, [and] one mediator also between God and men,
[the] man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the
testimony [borne] at the proper time. " 1 Tim. 2:5,6
**********************************************************
here we have two verses which seem to contradict each other... on
the one hand, in Mark's Gospel as breathed by God, he uses the word
" many " to count an undisclosed number for whom the Savior gave His
life as a ransom...
while in Paul's letter, God breathed as well, he uses the term
" all " to describe a disclosed number for whom the Savior gave His
life as a ransom.
" all " doesn't mean " many " and " many " certainly doesn't mean
" all ." without falling into errors brought on by human emotions and
denominational tradition, we must look carefully into the atoning
death of Christ to see who are the objects of His grace...
a pardon is not a pardon at all if it doesn't pardon.
Jesus Christ came to take away all of the sins of the many.
( Mk.10:45 ) if Paul intends to mean Christ ransomed all sinners then
" all, " sinners are ransomed... then all men are saved... least we
say Christ failed at Calvary as the Universalists do. now we must
explain how " all " are not saved.
remember, Jesus Christ is Eternal God come in the flesh, He can not
fail at whatever He does... if He died for " all, " all are saved. but
they aren't... the Bible says " many " will go on to perdition.
Mt. 7:22,23; for example.
Paul is referring to the believers when he uses the word " all " in
1 Tim. 2:5,6 to point out the objects of Christ's ransom. only they
are covered by the atoning blood of Christ which cleanses sinners from
the wrath to come on those not cleansed.
" all " in 1 Tim. 2:5,6 are ' men out of every tribe and nation, but
not all tribes and nations as a whole.' just as the word " world " in
John 3:16... not all are believers in Christ and all have not been
graced by eternal life.
in this context the apostle says God " desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth " it is obvious Paul is not
teaching Universal Atonement... he uses the word ' desires ' and not
the word ' purposes '... the verse does not say " God purposes all men
to be saved. "
Paul also knows full well that only those chosen in eternity past,
without any good being found in them, are purposed by God to be given
His mercy, love and grace ( Eph. 1:3-14 ) and the rest, He passed
over. Joh. 17:9
************************************************
the Universalist has a gospel where Christ paid the penalty for the
sins of all but all are not saved. he put into his gospel a plan of
salvation where man has to do something righteous towards God in order
to literally save himself.
this is salvation by works; a Savior who failed at Calvary since
many go on to perdition ( Mt. 7:22,23 ) a God who is not omnipotent.
the so called free will of man, according to Scripture, is not at
all free, but is bound by Satan, sin and death. man is in the
" snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to
do his will. " ( 2 Tim. 2:26 )
he is said to be of the same nature as the devil and wants to do the
desires of Satan ( Joh. 8:44 ) which are to fill the lusts of his
flesh and mind. ( Eph. 2:1-3 ) his thoughts are only evil continually
( Gen. 6:5 ) all the while he is in sexual union with Satan his lover.
1 Joh. 5:19
this being the case, man is incapable of gaining or contributing to
his own salvation since everything in man is contrary to the things of
God. Joh. 1:12,13; Ro. 8:7
his salvation must come from without... he must be saved by
unmerited favor since even man's free will moves him to choose Satan
over God just as our first parents... he can not be saved by a
righteous work of his own will. Joh. 1:12,13
this idea is the foundation of Universalism... reprobates, by
nature, give " feigned obedience " unto God " because of the greatness
of His power. " ( Ps. 66:3 ) so they've concocted a plan of salvation
centered on the righteousness of man at the expense of Christ who they
teach, failed at Calvary.
